But I don't think anybody would contest the fact that it also is a reference to a gay person, perjoratively.
Regardless, it still has a definition as a bundle of wood.

The word "gay" originally had a meaning of "happily excited : merry "
Like f@ggot, the reference to gay men was added later.
Pointing repeatedly to references where it uses other meanings of the word "gay" does not refute the fact that it has a long history in being a perjorative against homosexuals.

of course it doesn't.

it's absurd to pretend otherwise - or perhaps just a baiting by those looking for an argument to develop.

one person actually responded to my post with "bullshit" - did that somehow REFUTE whate I wrote? Of course not. I just decided to let the troll go without feeding it.

How old are you that you don't know this?

Quite frankly, I never heard the word, gay, used in regular culture to denote happiness (except in Christmas songs) in my entire life. And I am 51.

The fact is that, by the 60s & 70s, the use of gay to denote happiness was archaic. Honestly, when was the last time you heard someone say something like "I am feeling gay today," meaning, "I feel happy"??

I have never seen or heard it used that way anywhere but in very old novels and in movies set in the early 20th century or before.

I guess, as with a lot of words, it depends on not only where you grew up but also your culture and acquaintances.
Some people laugh at the word "ice box" when used to mean refrigerator. I have heard it referred to as a "Frigidaire" which is a brand name. Through all the technical advances some kept the same word to describe a box that keeps food from spoiling. "Coke" for coca-cola. "Pocket book" is another one. I don't know when it originated, but some still call a purse by that name.

Let's just wind this up by saying-A gay by any other name would still sound as queer.

Straight people have living rooms...

Gay people have "parlors"...

no

gay people have living rooms and studies

straight people have family rooms, rec rooms, rumpus rooms, tv rooms, bonus rooms and 'great rooms'

straight people don't seem to believe that it's really a room until there's a tv in it...and, preferably, has food very nearby

my mother uses "pocket book"

she also call the refrigerator a 'fridge. I don't know if that's short for Frigidaire or refrigerator.

she also uses "coke" for all cola flavored beverages - and kleenex for all tissues

I know and have heard and probably used every last one of those. Where I grew up we also put our food in a sack, eat dinner in the middle of the day and supper at night, have conniptions, gather a mess of beans from our garden and eat a bait of them afterward.

I grew up in the north Alabama foothills of the Appalachians and we speak archaic/colloquial English with the best of them

But I have still never heard anyone say "I feel gay" meaning "I feel happy."

Well, I feel gay!
So, guess you can't say that again!
