absolutely.

It was widely used in the tabloids about Oscar Wilde during his trials.

In America, it was popularized by its use about effeminate men in the early movies.

It was never used affectionately - it was a term of derision and ridicule.

You've never watched "Zorro the Gay Blade"?...The whole movie was prissy and effeminate!...

It's etymology may go back that far but gay was commonly used in regular culture to denote happiness even into the 1960's and 70's.

How old are you that you don't know this?

The Flintstones Lyrics

Flintstones. Meet the Flintstones.
They're the modern stone age family.
From the town of Bedrock,
They're a page right out of history.

Let's ride with the family down the street.
Through the courtesy of Fred's two feet.

When you're with the Flintstones
you'll have a yabba dabba doo time.
A dabba doo time.
You'll have a gay old time.

Tile :Nat King Cole - Lush Life
This is lyrics from LYRICS
(billy strayhorn)

I used to visit all the very gay places
Those come what may places
Where one relaxes on the axis of the wheel of life
To get the feel of life...
From jazz and cocktails.

The girls I knew had sad and sullen gray faces
With distant gay traces
That used to be there you could see where theyd been washed away
By too many through the day...
Twelve oclock tales.

Then you came along with your siren of song
To tempt me to madness!
I thought for a while that your poignant smile was tinged with the sadness
Of a great love for me.

Ah yes! I was wrong...
Again,
I was wrong.

Life is lonely again,
And only last year everything seemed so sure.
Now life is awful again,
A troughful of hearts could only be a bore.
A week in paris will ease the bite of it,
All I care is to smile in spite of it.

Ill forget you, I will
While yet you are still burning inside my brain.
Romance is mush,
Stifling those who strive.
Ill live a lush life in some small dive...
And there Ill be, while I rot
With the rest of those whose lives are lonely, too..
