Default Driver Retesting

I think that older people should have mandatory retesting to keep their drivers licenses. At the age of 55 testing should be redone. Vision is not as good as it used to be, reaction time is down, and in general many are a hazard on the road.

I am curious what other people think.

I agree in part,I think the age of 65 would be more appropriate for mandatory retesting.I'm 56 and have no problem passing the written and the vision test.I am much more concerned with drivers in their 80's who drive 30 mph in a 55 mph zone leaning forward with their chin on the dashboard..

I believe Belgium requires their drivers to surrender their license at the age of 80. Not a bad idea..

Ab-so-toot-ly!...

I don't care if anyone that age feels insulted either...I'll take safety over perceived affronts anyday...

AND it should be done in 5 year increments...

I voted yes, but I will qualify it by saying I think ALL drivers whatever their age should be retested in written and driving skills to make sure they still remember the laws and update themselves on any new ones! I especially am in favor of including questions on driving in the vicinity of an 18 wheeler and a motorcycle!

I was trying to edit my last post to say test everyone every four years.
Yes a lot of younger and older people don't know about the wind challenges in driving a motor cycle. And many who have common sense otherwise don't realize they need to stay back from a tight intersection when they see a truck with turn signal on. I think questions about big trucks blind side should be asked along with questions about passing trucks and motorcycles etc.
There are some crazy drivers out there and lets face it all of us could stand a little brush up from time to time in an area that literally allows us to take other people's lives in our hands!

Are we talking about retesting using the written and visual or are we talking "road" testing every year after 55 ? I don't mind yearly written and visual but many would complain about a yearly road test.

I'd go for both...

Hand/eye coordination is as important, if not more, than whether or not knowing your hands should be at 10 and 2...

I agree as long as it's for everyone from the time they obtain a drivers license till they turn in their keys. Every four to five years. If nothing else just look at the new freeways and subdivisions going up from time to time. I think it would end a lot of road rage if we brushed up and actually knew the law instead of thinking we knew the law.

In spirit I can go along with yearly..written..visual and road testing but it would not have a chance in hell of passing. The elderly have some serious voting clout. It would take a miracle to bring back yearly written/visual.To bring yearly road testing back including the expense,is just not politically realistic.
