I think elders would have a lot of clout as Spence said, so I propose every five years every age driver. That would make it fair and cover all bases without discrimination lawsuits.
But we all know we would all squawk, so why don't we think seniors would do the same? I'd like to see truck drivers have to take at least a written test more often and maybe a driving/parking test ![]()

Why test the 25 year old with perfect vision and perfect driving record? That person is at the prime of their driving. The best physical state as far as reaction time. Being a truck driver, I would say that most of us are more acutely aware of the road than your average motor vehicle operator... with the exception of motorcycles.

My wife sure got herself in a predicament, she let her drivers license lapse for four years! She is a very good driver and she has never had a moving violation in 38 years of driving. Anyway...she continued to drive during those four years even though her license had become invalad. She would not listen to my countless pleas to renew. Finally..she decided that four years driving on a lapsed license was a little long and she went down to renew. She passed the written and visual tests with flying colors! After the test, they noticed that her license had lapsed for more than four years. Now here's the kicker..they told her that Michigan requires that the driver take drivers training and a road test for licences that have lapsed for more than 4 years.
She enrolled in drivers education "after" driving without a ticket in 38 years.I can't even claim that record!!! Anyway..she paid the $275.00 enrollment fee and blew the road test!!! Not on the road mind you..she failed to parallel park between two parked cars that had only a 4 foot total clearence. That's 2 feet on each end, sounds like a mile right? This may seem like room to spare but it is "very" tight. I went down to look at it myself and I'm not sure I could have made the clearance in our full sized van!.On top of that, she was very nervous and I'm sure that plaid a major roll in her failure. No moving violations in 38 years of driving in a fairly large city in very heavy traffic but she let her licence lapse. Now she has to pay "another" $275.00 and take the road test,actually..parallel parking test again.Believe me..she has more than learned her lesson on procrastination.. ![]()

I don't think my Dad ever had a drivers license. He went to sea at a very young age as did many of my uncles and cousins. Either the town would be within walking distance or he would have someone pick him up at the dock.
He was stopped for a routine traffic check once while driving my aunt's car. He told the officer when asked that he didn't own a drivers license. The officer asked him how many years he'd been driving. He told him forty years. "How many accidents have you had?" "None" "Have a nice day, sir." Exchanges like that one wouldn't happen today!

I know but now my wife is so nervous she will never pass the parallel parking! After 38 years of driving and no tickets,I have to take her to the school parking lot so she can practice "parking"...
