A girl from Surinam humorously explained it to me like this:
person who speaks three languages: trilingual

person who speaks two languages: bilingual

person who speaks one language: American

Ha, that is great.

On a side note, I speak two: English (native) and Austrian German.

Well, I guess just English now though when I was in high school I was pretty fluent in French and Spanish too. Not having used those languages for over 20 years though means that I can't speak them any longer really. I can semi translate verbal or written French and Spanish and get the gist of it. I was able to brush up on my spanish some while living in Mexico for a few months, but most spoke english too, so I only really got the basics again. When I worked for Sony, I started taking Japanese lessons but didn't get very far before I decided to quit working there. And, prior to going and while in India, I was taking Hindi lessons but found that was pointless since most people in India don't actually speak Hindi but rather one of the dozens of local dialects.

And one of my german friends taught me some colorful phrases in german. That's about all I know of it. LOL

Same...

I could speak French, Dutch, and Latin when growing up, but, not using them in the last 30 years I can no longer speak any with confidence any longer. I still know a few colorful phrases in Dutch though.

English and Greek.

I have contemplated learning a third, but unsure which one. Italian, Japanese, Russian and a couple others all intrigue me.

Leaving out the ones that I know just a few phrases in, I would say two.

And no, they are not curses, it's called being able to order a glass of water without insulting someone's mother...

I have some Spanish friends who when I am with them they often forget I am English and they babble on, then remember me sitting there and speak English! I learned Spanish whilst working as a nanny in Mallorca almost 30 years ago and was almost fluent then but of course have forgotten how to speak it although I can just about get the gist of what is saying when around Spanish speakers. Like any language, unless you use it you lose it.

I also speak and understand Hebrew.

I used to speak German moderately well. I have not used it for anything beyond annoying my partner with an occasional phrase in 30 years. So it is buried somewhere in the recesses of my brain along with differential equations, and the fundamentals of chemistry. As someone else said "Unless you use it, you lose it."
