Default Are Ethics and Morality Dead in American Society?

I have my daughter's permission to use this. She is usually bubbly lately because she planning the details of her spring wedding. But she was pretty steamed when I talked with her today.
The engaged couple have been spending their weekends visiting florists, looking at possibilities for the reception and scouring department stores for stuff for the wedding. They also are making purchases for their new non-bachelor digs.

While they were in Cosco, they applied for a card. They told the clerk they were engaged so could they just get the card in both their names. The clerk asked them if they were living together. When the bible school graduate couple answered in the negative, the same lady informed them they could not do a joint account. She even told them if they had lied and just said they were living together it would have been a lot easier on them.

What bothers me is not that my daughter and her future husband couldn't get that joint card, but that young people today might be getting a message that honesty and integrity is only good for the movies. Am I right or wrong?

I agree with you saltwn, ethics and morality are certainly in serious decline and there are many examples of this. I'm a landlord and a Christian, most of the couples who apply to rent my properties are not married. I would prefer to rent only to "married" couples but I was informed that if I turn away these couples only on the grounds that they were not married,I could end up defending myself in court and I could face loss of my licence and tax penalties...

But.....Isn't that an invasion on your civil rights as a practicing Christian?!
I'm thinking about people whose children don't have to get immunized due to their beliefs and college cafeteria schedules being redone to accommodate Ramadan.

My thoughts exactly...one of my fellow landlords told me the only way to get around this dilemma is to fore-go claiming depreciation on my taxes. That would be a price that most landlords would be unwilling to pay! I make more off depreciation and other tax benefits than I make off the rent..

I'm seriously torn on this one. On the one hand you own the the property and should be able to rent to whomever you want be it Mormons only or crack dealers only or married only couples.

But that's only dealing with this one issue...

Along the overall lines, remember Kitty Genovese?...

Quote:
The story of Genovese's murder became an almost-instant parable about the supposed callousness, or at least apathy to others' plight, of either New York City, urban America, or humanity in general. Much of this framing of the event came in reaction to an investigative article[10] in the New York Times written by Martin Gansberg and published on March 27, two weeks after the murder. The article bore the headline "Thirty-Eight Who Saw Murder Didn't Call the Police"; the public view of the story crystallized around a quote from the article, from an unidentified neighbor who saw part of the attack but deliberated, before finally getting another neighbor to call the police: "I didn't want to get involved."
Look at what's going on in today's society...

Rappers get MORE cred when they get shot or end up in jail...

People don't want to "snitch" on criminals...

Dr. Ruth's motto is "If it feels good, do it."...

Sex & the City showed that being a whore is okay...You can always just call it it a "healthy sex life"...

The lady cop who just recently planned on suing the people she was trying to help because of a wet floor where they were keeping their non-breating baby whom they just took out of a pool...

People scream at other drivers because they were "inconveniently" in their way...

Paris Hilton is a role-model...Pat & Debbie Boone are laughed at...

The Sopranos are looked up to...The Gottis, Flavor Flav & that New York girl get their own shows...

More people know what Brad & Angelina are doing then their own Reps in Congress...

When a comedian says he does pot to start a story, he gets applause...

I could go on and on...

All very valid points. On the wonderful seesaw it is very difficult is not impossible to keep these things in balance especially when the fulcrum itself is on a seesaw.

But for people who, only recently, have grown up as "latchkey kids" or just had parent(s) who were more concerned with their sales goals than teaching kids right from wrong, that fulcrum ain't nowhere near the middle...

The second the nuclear family became ONE way to raise well-adjusted children instead of THEE way to raise well-adjusted children, ethics and morality gave way...
