You know, to me, its just illogical to go to a country where you are planning on living for a long period of time, and not learning the language.

There isn't another country in the world that coddles illegal immigrants the way we do. If you were to move to any other country, you would be expected communicated in that country's language, not force them to learn yours.

And it's discriminatory, too. It only addresses Spanish speaking people. Why is that? In Detroit, there is a HUGE population of Middle eastern population. Yet when you call Michigan's government, it's 'Press 9 for Spanish'.

I respect someone who is trying to make their life better. But if you are going to come here to live, and work, become a part of this country. Learn the language, become a citizen, pay your taxes like the rest of us.

[Which language? The language of commerce? The language of religion?

Thats all well and good, but considering that we do not have an official/legal language it's difficult to enforce and even more difficult to expect people to follow it. We American's are coddled because generally, where ever we choose to go, people will speak to us in English.

And we have a problem with logical representation. Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world behind English. Why would it be so discriminatory to INCLUDE an additional substantial percentage of people as opposed to removing the option for Spanish which would EXCLUDE that percentage.

I can realistically agree with the last two, but considering that we have no official legal language, I don't think that should be required. I think that Americans are lazy when it comes to thinking and culture. I pose that it is significantly better for us to live in a mixed nation than one that spoke the same language because this mixed status is the closest thing we have to feeling like a minority nation. We, as citizens of 'the only superpower' have a bloated self image and fail to play a cooperative role in international politics. Part of this is unwillingness to cooperate (give up the demanded leadership role), unwillingness to learn (as in additional languages/cultures), and unwillingness to care (as in desire to improve ourselves and thus or relations with others.

yes we should have an official language because it is absurd to expect everyone else in the country and tax dollars to accommodate those who refuse to speak the language of this country. If we start instituting multilingualism where does it stop, does it stop at making everyone learn two languages, three languages or more just to accommodate individuals who refuse to assimilate?

Exactly...when my grandfather came to this country he spoke only French. Within two short years,he not only spoke English,he became a plant superintendent. He was proud to become an American!

I thought we all spoke American! LOL!!! The answer is yes. And we, the citizens of this country, shouldn't have to press #1 for english when we call customer service!

English is our official language. But we should practice ourselves in multi-lingual languages. It is good to speak other language.

Of course it's good to speak other languages that's not the point! Should we be required to hire teachers who speak Spanish,Dutch and French because of a reluctance to assimilate? Must we make drivers test available in several languages and who pays the cost of being all things to all people?

Herein lies the issue. Illegals are not moving here to stay, they are coming here to earn money to send home. They have no intentions of being Americans... ever.

I iwll not go so far as to say they take jobs away from Americans... because pretty typically the jobs they hold are ones that we don't want. The Americans who do not have jobs are like that because they are lazy or coddled by our government...
