Default Ed Rendell Overheard On Open Mic About Janet Napolitano

Too funny...

Janet’s perfect for that job. Because for that job, you have to have no life. Janet has no family. Perfect. She can devote literally 19-20 hours a day to it.
No family?...You're qualified!...

I am amazed that public officials still don't understand the dangers of having a private conversation near a "microphone". Can you say busted?...Rendell should have known better and his idea of qualifications criteria needs work!

I can't watch the video from here at work, but reading the quote it sounds as if he's merely commenting on how time consuming the job is...

What am I missing?

I think you may be approaching the issue from a different angle.
I know I am.

I'm in a position where travel is a must. Being away from home is expressed as a percentage that is expected.
If I have issues that would prevent me from flying, I would be less viable for my position.
There are a couple guys in similar positions who have directly stated that they don't want to do the travel, because of family.

The "family" aspect can be very important in employment considerations. If a person HAS a "family", that can even be taken into account for "raises" and layoffs. If an employee has a new baby on the way, wouldn't it be nice to keep him on or give him more of the upcoming raise percentage?
There is sometimes a not so subtle discrimination that occurs.

While the comment may be crassly phrased, I can appreciate the underlying issue behind it.

Finally watched the video and as I suspected, Campbell Brown's commentary is way off base.

There's nothing sexist or discriminatory about the comment. Napolitano is perfect for the job because obviously Rendell believes it's a time consuming one and she has the ability to devote that time.

I'm a single father. I do everything I can right now to limit my travel / extra time at work I can and I understand that might mean others getting opportunities for advancement that might be less qualified than me because of that. It's reality.

There will always be a human element to unequal treatment. I actually believe most people try to treat others fairly based on their value to a company and not based on whether or not they have a new baby on the way or a family to feed. Obviously there are exceptions...

Ode to non-news girl:
STF up

Time is a consideration
for some jobs. And yes women
do most of the family management
especially if the husband
has a dynamic
career.
It is a concern for employers
to make sure
(as the O. staff no doubt did),
the person is committed
in as many ways as possible.
Little non-news girl,
there is a double standard
and will be as long as we
women are the ones who
have babies.
Hello.
[End of Ode to non-news girl.]

Make a great rap song, huh?
