From Democratic VP Candidate To McCain's Man

Quote:
President Bush addressed the crowd at the Xcel Energy Center via satellite from the White House. Fred Thompson painted a historical picture of Sen. John McCain's heroic five-year struggle in a Vietnamese prison camp. There was a video tribute to former President Ronald Reagan.

Yet it was a speech from an unlikely source that not only stole the spotlight, but also set the stage for an even bloodier political war down the road.

Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman said America needs a president that can be counted on in a time of war. For him, the candidate is Republican McCain.
Pretty much stuff everyone knew...

But look down a little further and you'll see the Democratic Party in action...

What do you do to a Senator who goes with what he believes in instead of listening to what the party tells him to believe in?

Well...Hell hath no fury like the Democratic Party scorned...

Quote:
"I'm here tonight because John McCain is the best choice to bring our country together and lead our country forward. I'm here because John McCain's whole life testifies to a great truth: being a Democrat or a Republican is important. But it is not more important than being an American," Lieberman said.

Charles Schumer, the senior Senator from New York, begs to differ. In fact, most Democrats are furious with Lieberman.

"I like Joe Lieberman, but that's a big mistake for him," Schumer said. "To be pro-war and to have his views on the issues, everyone respects that. But you don't go over to the other side."

Former New Jersey Gov. Tom Kean praised Lieberman for breaking ranks despite the consequences he's likely to face.

"He's going to be punished by the Democratic Party and he knows it. But he wants to do it because he thinks he's the best candidate for president," Kean said.

Lieberman could lose his Homeland Security Committee chairmanship. Right now the Democrats need him to hold the majority, but if they pick up seats in the fall all bets are off.
Follow your heart...and pay!!!!...

All I can say is at least Joe L. is doing this because he believes it, not for money or power or jumping off a sinking ship as some politicians have done in the past.

I respect Joe Lieberman for standing up for his personal convictions, but I also think that he should lose his status within the Democratic Senate. Part of being a member of a party is supporting your candidates. He clearly doesn't do that. As an independent, that is his right. The party is also well within their right to dismiss him from his chairmanships.

Personally, I would love to see an insurgence of independent representatives. Representatives that cast aside the negatives associated with both parties and operate with a fair, commonsense approach.

They just ask them to be smart, truthful, honest, and show a modicum of good sense." Ann Richards, Former Texas Governor

That's right, toe the line or get out. "Party over country." "If Joe's convictions are such that he cannot support his party's candidate, then throw him out for standing for what he believes in instead of submitting to the Party."

McCain's the closest thing we've seen in years to an Independent Presidential candidate....

I don't like Joe L. I never liked Joe L. I didn't like him when he was a Dem. And if McCain wins he and Lindsey Graham will be the 3 Amigos. And that is all I need to vote against that ticket.

For those of you that think McCain is a reformer. Did you happen to notice that all the biggest pork barrel boys are supporting him. "Why? Oh gee Mikeyy I just don't know. Maybe they have all decided in the spirit of unity that they are all off the lobbyist tit."

The Democratic Party is not Joe's Party. It hasn't been for some years...

Hey..I like Joe L. but to call himself a "Democrat" during the RNC convention was shall we say,a bit of a stretch!
