Referring to Corsi’s most recent book, Elmendorf said, “It’s on the front page of The New York Times. It's number one on The New York Times best-seller list. Right now, I would be very aggressive with reporters and factually going through the book and responding and making it clear that this is a bunch of bullsh-t.”

Kerry himself is already implementing the lessons of 2004. The Massachusetts senator launched a website Wednesday, Truth Fights Back, challenging the assertions in Corsi’s book. Kerry sent an e-mail to his former supporters headlined, “Book on Obama Hopes to Repeat Anti-Kerry Feat.”

Former Kerry campaign advisers believe Obama's senior aides must figure out how to effectively and directly respond to the book. Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor said the campaign is speaking to reporters to directly to challenge the merits of the book.

He added in an email that “this book is nothing but a series of lies that were long ago discredited, written by an individual who was discredited after he wrote a similar book to help George Bush and Dick Cheney get re-elected four years ago."

“The Obama campaign is going to have to decide if they are going to go after this, who is going to do it, and to what extent they are going to do that, because they have to be careful not to blow it up,” said a former member of Kerry’s inner circle, who would only speak on the condition of anonymity.

The one-time senior adviser added, “Obama’s campaign has to absolutely make sure they can respond to every charge and make sure they have all the research on this because the lack of this [research] was an enormous impediment to responding to the ads and the Swift Boat book.”

Corsi’s coauthored 2004 book, "Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry," became the foundation for a small advertising campaign attacking both the merits of Kerry’s service in Vietnam — where he was thrice-decorated with Purple Hearts — as well as Kerry’s stance against the war after returning stateside.

Kerry initially wanted to respond directly to the charges but his top circle of advisers, after heated debate, counseled against it, former senior advisers have said. In the subsequent weeks that August, as the national media picked up the story and began constantly looping the ads, Kerry’s campaign reversed itself and went on the offensive. Today, within Kerry’s circle and outside it, the view is that the response was too late.

“Kerry wanted to make sure the charges were rebutted,” the former senior adviser said. Surrogates including longtime Democratic top operative John Podesta responded instead.

“At a certain point it was not enough,” the adviser explained.

By taking public financing for the general election, the Kerry campaign further limited its ability to respond aggressively on the airwaves, aides said, which affected the decision not to launch a major advertising rebuttal.

Obama does not have Kerry’s financial limitations. Furthermore, some former Kerry advisers are now well embedded into the Obama campaign. Jim Margolis, a one-time Kerry media consultant, is now a senior Obama adviser, and Stephanie Cutter, the Kerry campaign’s spokeswoman, is now chief of staff to Michelle Obama. Other top Kerry advisers, such as former campaign manager Mary Beth Cahill, also converse with members of Obama’s inner circle on occasion.

The Obama campaign first must “authoritatively debunk every single assertion, probably in writing,” said Tad Devine, Kerry’s chief strategist in 2004. He added that Obama’s campaign should also implement an “absolutely frontal attack on the people making the charges” as well as establish “connections between this effort and [John] McCain’s campaign.”

This book is no surprise to me,I saw it coming months ago! Kerry listened to poor advice and wimped out big time.It will be interesting to see if the Obama camp learns by the mistakes of others.

One of the most vile smear peddlers of the 2004 election has found a new target.

Jerome Corsi just published a new book full of rehashed distortions and the same old lies about Barack Obama, and the right-wing noise machine is in full gear promoting it.

In 2004, Corsi helped launch the Swift Boat smear campaign with a book of distortions and lies he wrote about John Kerry. Corsi was so extreme in his misrepresentations that even other Swift Boat attackers tried to distance themselves from him.

TOO CRAZY EVEN FOR SWIFTBOAT LIARS

Corsi Was Dropped From Unfit for Command Promotions Because of His Anti-Muslim, Anti-Catholic Comments. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote in an editorial, "Consider the book "Unfit for Command," put out by a collection of partisans who have now made it acceptable for veterans to attack each other's war records. The current National Review carries a piece decrying the bookstores that fail to carry "John O'Neill's book." This is curious in that the volume has a second author, but Jerome Corsi has dropped from the marketing because he has been revealed as the author of religiously bigoted remarks published on a Web site. Corsi not only considers Muslims to be pederasts, but he took the trouble to slam Catholic priests and refers to the pope as senile. O'Neill Tried to Minimize Corsi's Role in Unfit for Command After Bigoted Comments Came to Light. "In a bit of historical revisionism, Swift Boat Veterans for Truth founder and Unfit for Command co-author John O'Neill distorted Jerome Corsi's role in co-authoring the book. O'Neill's backtracking comes on the heels of Media Matters for America's documentation of Corsi's history of posting bigoted comments. During appearances on MSNBC's Scarborough Country on August 10 and CNN's Wolf Blitzer Reports on August 11, O'Neill downplayed Corsi's role in writing the book. When asked about Corsi's involvement, O'Neill asserted, Corsi was "simply an editor and not really any sort of co-author." But an MMFA item entitled "Unfit book materials show Corsi more than just an 'editor,'" revealed Corsi to be much more than simply an editor of the anti- Kerry book. That is the theme of Mr. Corsi's new book, "The Late Great USA: The Coming Merger with Mexico and Canada," which says the Bush administration's 'globalist agenda' is leading to a merger of the countries through the implementation of policies and laws to open trade barriers and renovate the highway systems in anticipation of increased travel within the new megastate. Mr. Corsi said a growing number of Americans think the North American Union is being forced onto Americans. Government officials say the idea is no more than an unjustified conspiracy theory spread through the Internet. Mr. Corsi said the impetus of the plan was the creation of the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America, announced by leaders of the United States, Mexico and Canada at Waco, Texas, in 2005." Corsi Cites Time Story To Say "Divorce Papers Confirm..." Corsi wrote, "Other sources say divorce papers confirm that a civil ceremony was held on Maui, on February 2, 1961, when Ann was three months pregnant with Obama." Corsi cites the April 9th, 2008 Time story for his reference to Obama's parents' wedding. [p. 44]

EVEN A LITTLE BASIC RESEARCH DISPROVES CORSI'S FABRICATIONS

FALSE: "Senator Obama could claim to be a citizen of Kenya, as well as of the United States. Obama can trace his heritage back to his mother, who was born in the United States and was an American citizen when he was born, and to his father, who was born in Kenya and was a Kenyan citizen when Obama was born." But make sure that you put him down for smearing someone right before you smear him....

If you want to see higher standards of behavior from others, start by raising your own standards. As an example:
My son and I went bowling the other night. In the lane next us were two High School age young men who had no clue about the normal courtesy of not bowling when the people next to you were bowling. We made a point of waiting for them to finish every time and after about 4-5 frames each, they caught on and started giving us the same courtesy. Shortly after that, we were all "high-5ing" each other and had good time. Now I could have been a jerk and returned the discourtesy, but instead, I "walked the walk" and they responded in kind.

If you expect better behavior from others, start by raising your own standards, not lowering them.

I have no doubt that Corsi's books are along the same lines as an Ann Coulter or Keith Olbermann rant, but fs is right...

Attacking somebody personally because they're attacking someone personally doesn't make much sense...

I realize that it's the only thing you can do in this circumstance, as there IS no excuse for the kind of smears and lies this guy sells - but really, your determination to find fault with ME instead of Corsi is rather transparent

We haven't commented on the smears Corsi does...In fact, we may even AGREE they are smears...

But doing so using the EXACT SAME METHOD Corsi uses is just plain dumb...It's like saying "That bloated, fatty called me a fatso and I think calling people fat is wrong."...

We're just poking you with a stick because you're getting all high and mighty about someone smearing someone else and your only response is to smear the guy. It's people like you who have led the way in getting the bar lowered to where it is now. Instead of taking the high road and setting a better standard, you choose to do what you can to even further lower it. Either smearing someone else is OK or it isn't. If you want to apply different standards depending on who's getting smeared, then all you're doing is perpetuating the problem.
