A New Low: Blackmailing Campaign Contributors

A New Kind of Politics [Byron York]

The New York Times reports today that Tom Matzzie, a former MoveOn official and well-known left-wing operative, is leading a new group, Accountable America, that is sending threatening letters to big Republican political donors, warning them against making any more contributions. "The warning letter is intended as a first step," the Times reports,

alerting donors who might be considering giving to right-wing groups to a variety of potential dangers, including legal trouble, public exposure and watchdog groups digging through their lives.

The Times says nearly 10,000 Republican donors will receive the letter this week: "The letter is an opening shot across the bow from an unusual new outside political group on the left that is poised to engage in hardball tactics to prevent similar groups on the right from getting off the ground this fall…. 'We want to stop the Swift Boating before it gets off the ground,' said Mr. Matzzie, who described his effort as 'going for the jugular.'"
The Corner on National Review Online

This is a turn for the worse in the history of this nation and our political campaigns.

I'm against this kind of tactic - as I'm sure most people are. It's just wrong.

This is being pushed by "Accountable America"...

This is what they SAY in their "About Us" section...

Quote:
Accountable America is a non-partisan, non-profit corporation. We do not seek to elect or defeat candidates or endorse candidates for federal office.
Now THIS is what you get when you google it...

Got that?...They consider themselves "non-partisan" because they don't endorse for FEDERAL offices...

But they consider STATE offices a totally different story...

It is ok. It just depends on what your definition of "is" is.

A big problem with Progessives is that they don't differentiate between black and white...

Everything's a shade of gray...

This isn't any 'new low'. This stuff has been going on since the founding of the Republic. And, both wings of the Establishment have been doing it since the beginning.

Moveon.org is about as 'independent' as George W. is from the Republican Party.

The difference is their insouciance, perhaps.

ZWhen it was done one on one and behind closed doors there was a limit to how much arm twisting was done and because it was hush hush no one got any ideas about doing likewise except if they were in the right (wrong) situation and did it the right (wrong) way.

Here, it is just openly brazen and invites the next guy to be even more outrageous to top the Moveon guy.

And all it does is fling the doors open wide to all kinds of other abrasions and it will make us all harder and more ruthless and cutthroat. And the possibility of bi-partisan geniality becomes less and less likely. The idea of cooperation in the Senate and Congress become less likely. And if we find 'Gotcha!' politics distasteful this will be the harbinger of even worse acts before we even get to November.

The Dems and Repubs will one day be like the Sunni and Shia, if we haven't gotten to that point yet.

And the fault is this porthole which allows everyone and their alien ideas and attitudes in. Then some of the fuzzy brained American youngsters who are our weakest links will adopt some of the attitudes they see expressed online. And when they see how cool they can feel by being a smart assed jerk online they start a social virus that can't be stopped. We are all being infected by these electronic aliens who've invaded our society.

And now America is no longer ours.

Congratulations (to no one in particular) on making America a little colder, crueler and more uncaring in our dealings with each other.
