Default Battle of the goofs

I just watched Lieberman and Kerry debate on Meet the press. How stupid are they? Or we?

Obama said this week that he would consider drilling as part of an over all energy strategy. One that would include perusing alternatives more actively. The right should celebrate that. But instead Lieberman attacked him as a flip flopper. Even though he has also had a recent conversion. But if that wasn't silly enough there was more.
Brokaw asked about McCain's flip on raising SSI taxes. Lieberman said. "Only as part of a overall strategy". Almost exactly what Obama just said about drilling.
That is the Democrat senator Lieberman. But to make it worse they sent Kerry to represent Obama. What a waste of space. The ridiculous comment from Lieberman went right past him. Like so much does. Its hard to judge which is most tiresome. Obama's camp should have sent Biden. Kerry needs to windsurf (Which I enjoy) back to the arms of the ketchup queen and STFU.IMHO

there is a big difference between changing one's opinion over the course of years...and changing one's mind in the course of LESS than a week...

When I was 20, I distinctly remember having a conversation with my best friend where I stated that I was against the death penalty...I even remember my words (paraphrasing - "If a guy kills 35 people and the government kills HIM, that's 36 peopl dead, and 36 is worse than 35.")...I can't remember when I changed my tune, but I'd guess by my mid 20s...I've been FOR the death penalty for at least a decade...

Is that a flip-flop?...Of course not...Times changes; opinions evolve; I saw more news reports of instances where I started realizing a different stance...

Now if I had that very same conversation with my best friend...and then TWO DAYS LATER told someone else that I was FOR the death penalty, THAT would be a flip-flop...There was no time for evolving opinions and would show that I was wishy-washy in my stance...

The latter is what Obama did...

He broke down and finally said he would be for some proposed offshore drilling...

But look at what he said exactly TWO DAYS earlier to a crowd in Missouri...

Quote:
Now the latest scheme is well, we’re going to drill offshore. Now, I want to be absolutely clear to everybody about this. If I thought that I could provide you some immediate relief on gas prices by drilling off the shores of California and New Jersey, I - I … I understand how desperate folks are. I met a guy who couldn’t go on a job search that lost his job, couldn’t go on a job search because of the high price of gas. Just couldn’t fill up his tank. I met a teacher in South Dakota who loved her job as a teacher on an Indian reservation, she had to quit because the drive was too far, it was taking up too much of her paycheck. I know how bad people are hurting. So If I thought that by drilling offshore, we could solve our problem, I’d do it.
He went from saying "If I thought it could help, I'd do it" (and calling it a scheme) to "I WILL do it" in the span of 48 hours...

That's a flip-flop...My guess is his campaign saw the polls and realized Obama was backing a plan in the public minority and needed to pander to the masses...

I don't see what is inconsistent. He is right that drilling won't solve our energy issue. And if it would he would support it. That is still absolutely right.

He said that he would except drilling in environmentally sound ways if it were part of an overall energy policy. That sounds reasonable to me. If the only way to get the right to embrace alternative energy and conservation etc. is to allow them to pay back their supporters in big oil then I can see an agreement in the works. The right can hand over our countries natural resources. So they get something. And the left gets to promote new technologies and a cleaner more self efficient country. Everybodies concerns are met.

Redd you are smarter then that. I understand his position. A kid could understand it. He said he would, he will, how ever you want to say it. It is the same. As part of a overall energy agreement. This is so simple.

McCain just changed his mind on taxing SSI. I don't care if he does. I think he was right to do so. I am not holding it against him. I am happy when any candidate says they will consider all options. Thats the way they get explored. I wish you would give at least that much credit to Obama. This partisan crap is too dumb to have to keep shooting down. Both of these guys are facing some realities and adjusting to the facts on the ground. In exactly the same way. Now you want to argue that your guy flip flops with more integrity. Isn't that just getting a little ridiculous.

That's NOW...a mere 40 days ago people were hurting just the same...Gas was $4.00 then also...

But here's Obama's words, which are 100% contradictory to his current statements...

Obama: no offshore drilling

Quote:
At a stop in Jacksonville today, Sen. Barack Obama plans to tell reporters that he continues to support the federal ban on off-shore drilling. His Republican rival, Sen. John McCain, said this week he would like to lift the ban and let states decide whether to drill.

“And when I am President, I will keep the moratorium in place and prevent oil companies from drilling off Florida’s coasts,” Obama says. “That’s how we can protect our coasts and still make the investments that will reduce our dependence on foreign oil and bring down gas prices for good.”

I think he still wants to leave it to the state of Florida in some ways. Because Florida's main draw is its coast. That is their income. I think McCain agrees BTW. And I still don't think he plans on just habnding anything over. He expects to get all we can from our reources. McCain wants to extend oil company tax breaks.
