Uprising: House GOP Stages Floor Revolt After Dems Skip Town Without Vote to Lower Gas Prices

Quote:
Washington, Aug 1 - In a dramatic revolt against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) refusal to allow Congress to vote on legislation to increase American-made energy and lower gas prices, House Republicans today refused to leave the House floor after Speaker Pelosi adjourned the House for the five-week August break, staying in the chamber to speak directly to Americans watching the historic event unfold above the floor in the House gallery. Even after lights, cameras, and microphones in the chamber were turned off, House Republicans were undeterred, continuing to make speech after speech demanding that Speaker Pelosi listen to the calls of the American people – including those coming from whistling, applauding, and cheering Americans sitting in the gallery – for more environmentally-responsible drilling for oil and gas here at home to reduce the price at the pump. Rep. John Culberson (R-TX) defied the Democratic majority by providing live updates on the protest via Twitter directly from the House floor.

Members participating in the spontaneous uprising included Reps. Roy Blunt, John Boehner, Michael Burgess, John Campbell, Eric Cantor, Shelly Moore Capito, John Carter, Mike Conaway, John Culberson, Charlie Dent, Jeff Fortenberry, Virginia Foxx, Louie Gohmert, Pete Hoekstra, Duncan Hunter, Thaddeus McCotter, Mike Pence, Tom Price, Ted Poe, Adam Putnam, Bill Sali, John Shadegg, John Shimkus, Tim Walberg, and Lynn Westmoreland.

The protest came just minutes after House Republican leaders delivered a letter to Speaker Pelosi demanding that she call the House back into emergency session this month to deal with America’s ever-worsening energy crisis. The letter noted:

Quote:
“With American families and small businesses facing record high gasoline prices, Congress has adjourned to leave Washington for a five-week break. The message this sends to the American people is bad enough; its ramifications, however, are far worse. You have the power to call Congress back into session at any moment to deal with issues of urgent national importance…”

“Congress should not take the next five weeks off while the American people suffer at the pump. We respectfully request that you schedule a vote on the comprehensive American Energy Act during an emergency legislative session this month."
Good move...

Apparently Pelosi doesn't believe the current crisis is so bad that taking over a month off seems reasonable...

Just out of curiousity...

Will the Repubs spend any time questioning why the Oil tycoons are seeing incredible RECORD profits, for any industry throughout history, in this time of economic crisis in the U.S.?

Nahhhh.
Of course not.
Obviously, the solution is to fork over more control to feed the troughs of the people who are gouging us at the pumps...

Well people need gas, they don't need many other things....oil companies will always make huge profits. The point is to look to who is really making the most profits, i.e the pharma.........

I think you're missing the context...

Gas prices are rising.
People keep talking about how Americans are using LESS gas because of rising gas prices.
Our economy, overall, is in poor shape.
And then the oil companies not only "make a profit", they make RECORD profits.
One news source I heard said that there has NEVER been a company reporting THAT HIGH of a profit. LESS gas being sold.
Exxon’s profit for the year was also the largest annual reported net income in U.S. history, according to Howard Silverblatt, a senior index analyst for Standard & Poor’s. He said the previous high was Exxon’s $25.3 billion profit in 2004.

Exxon Mobil posts record 4Q profit of $10.7 billion - Earnings - MSNBC.com

Put all the factors together...

Let me ask you something. If you have something that you want to sell when is the best time to sell it? When you are desperate or when you are not? This sudden increase in fuel prices are obviously not supply related. Because those numbers don't correlate. So what is the hurry to sell leases to companies who aren't drilling the leases they already have to drill? Lets say they gave them those leases today. The Dems say that we should only give them the leases that they are going to actively explore. But the Republicans voted against that measure. Why? If you want that oil so bad. Now lets say we negotiate a new lease today. Maybe they buy at todays dollars at todays price of oil. In ten years we will look back and sy. "who approved that ripoff" And the right will say. "Oh that happened under a Democrat congress. Even if they got the lease yesterday. It will make no difference in our situation. And even if they find more oil. It will probably only slow the growth in prices. In ten years or so. So what is the difference if we wait a few weeks before we bend over for big oil. We'll still be screwed.

First of all, leases cost money, that money goes to the government, let us not forget that! Next, if there is no real prospect of finding oil in these regions, why bother drilling at all? Finally....why are we being told that where we know there is oil, that those areas are off limits?

President Bush retains executive powers under the constitution,20th amendment and subsequent laws that allow him to force Congress into an “Extra” or “Special Session” when the nation faces extraordinary challenges. Harry Truman canceled a congressional vacation and so can Bush! Energy is a major issue and this is not the time for a month long vacation! Congressional ratings are already in the gutter and this just reinforces our low opinion of them.

Why am I not seeing MIT professors and car manufacturers (From anywhere on the Planet Earth), wind farmers and solar companies and T Boone Pickens all testifying before congress on the status of turning
away from foreign imports??

Simultaneously and in conjunction with the above efforts should be groups who predict trends as well as economists at large to give an opinion of:
Quote:
if we build "A" and "H" and get it online by this date___, and drill by this date___, when can we expect this thing to take shape and xactly how?
It is going to take both drilling and alternatives and rethinking the traditional sources as far as what goes where- maybe a product would serve us better in another area (thinking of the Pickens' plan), to help our country get off foreign oil by creating a
localized source.
They (Mrs. "P" and the "R's") better quit playing politics with our money!
