One thing's for sure. If the people who didn't want to leave their homes were one can short of a six pack, that mining disaster in the east showed us white people can act stupid on T.V. too.

I've met several "displaced" Katrina people across the country while traveling with my husband. All of them said they were better off. And that includes some whites and some blacks.
If I had had the luck and grace of God to escape such a storm, I would not set my foot back into New Orleans till officials burned every scrap of everything and started COMPLETELY over. That's what should have been done. But greed and "the tourist trade" wouldn't allow that.

Consumption is indeed important in a free economy: particularly the freedom of consumers to buy their goods in unhampered markets. However, key to long-term economic growth is investment (savings), which is the opposite of consumption. Public policies that promote consumption — such as low interest rates — do so at the expense of savings. Less savings means less investments; an economy that does not save or invest will consume all of its resources and eventually end up bankrupt.-David Saied

That was my point entirely, the appearence of a paniced government with the President jumping up and running out of the room.

It was a tough call on his part. You forget he wasn't sitting there listening to a long dissertation or in some panel discussion. He was sitting there while a child read a short little story to the group. He already been sitting there so he had every reason to believe it would end in a matter of minutes and then he could calmly exit and be off AS DIRECTED BY THE SECREAT SERVICE, not him. Did it last a minute or two longer than he would have liked? Probably. He did what was prudent, did not panic everyone. And it did make a hill of beans different.

Most people have never been through a hurricane and the recovery and have no knowledge of New Orleans then or now. The MSM spun it in order to attack Bush rather than dealing with the failures of the state and local government, and the people who simply refused to take responsibilty for themselves. We are into the season now and I no more expect the federal government to be the source of rescue and recovery now than I did 5 years ago or 10 years ago. I don't expect the President to come down and direct such efforts nor any federal official, they don't have the knowledge nor the training to do so in my city or state. NOLA is slowly coming around and my last visit could really see some of the change. Unfortuniately lots of things aren't changing and that includes a large part of the population which still waits for government to take care of them.

So are you saying that the only way Bush could have dealt with that situation was to "panic" or present an image of "panic"?
I'm amazed by what people like you will admit back-handedly, without even realizing it...

I've already explained how Bush could have circumvented the problem you describe. Instead, you insist he would have created it.
I honestly didn't think Bush was as incompetent as you insist he is...

Typical excuses to avoid responsibility.
Numerous legitimate complaints have been lodged for the local, state, and federal incompetence. These complaints typically get ignored...

Instead, what we see is this whiny defense of "you're attacking Bush".
That's not a defense.
Brownie failed.

I have repeatedly shown what FEMA THEMSELVES say their responsibilities are, including response to the disaster at hand.
REPEATEDLY, it gets ignored for redundant claims that FEMA is not responsible for what FEMA THEMSELVES admit they should do.

While you may not expect that from FEMA, others who DO expect what FEMA has said they are supposed to do will not be out of line for doing so.

But has decided to not give KS. 3 billion for out several winter storms that affected about 20 counties. And had plenty of people without power for over a week.
Maybe a message to our Dem Governor.
