Default Many blacks worry about Obama's safety

By DAVID CRARY,

NEW YORK - For many black Americans, it's a conversation they find hard to avoid, revisiting old fears in the light of bright new hopes.

They watch with wonder as Barack Obama moves ever closer to becoming America's first black president. And they ask themselves, their family, their friends: Is he at risk? Will he be safe?

There is, of course, no sure answer. But interviews with blacks across the country, prominent and otherwise, suggest that lingering worries are outweighed by enthusiasm and determination.

"You can't have lived through the civil rights movement and know something about the history of African-Americans in this country and not be a little concerned," said Edna Medford, a history professor at Washington's Howard University.

It is definately something to be concerned over... There are some very twisted individuals out there..

I had this conversation with a waitress in West Virginia just yesterday!
Many customers chimed in their opinions also.
The consensus was that Hillary as the first woman and Obama as the first black will each generate hatered among certain wackos if either becomes president. And I hadn't really thought of it, but there are some crazy folks out there! There are still men who look at me with distain cause they think I drive a truck. (I just ride along with husband). And I talk to women drivers who get static at certain docks and get put in back of everyone else. They say it doesn't happen often, but once would be enough for me!
And Hillary is so hated by a lot of folks.
But yes, Obama probably knows his life has been in danger since he started out with this. By now agents should be assigned to him. And I hope Washington does whatever is nessessary in that reguard.
Hopefully, for all the candidates, we are better prepared than when JFK and his wife road in an open car. And I don't think Marten Luther King was well protected. Or at least I don't know if he had FBI assigned to him. He should have under the circumstances. Because there were plots against his life
in virtually every town where it was known he would be. I'm sure of that.
God must have brought Obama thus far. As He surely must bring anyone who's ancestors came to this shore with nothing but anticipation.
To spite all the flack from different media, I think we have three of the nicest people running for office. They each think they can make a difference. I truly, truly believe that. They have different views about how to do things, but I don't think one of them is not blessed. And by that I mean they've been given the will and the power to run for office. If you think about it not one of the three left standing is a run of the mill presidential candidate.
McCain was a prisoner of war who didn't know he'd live to see another morning.
Hillary was a little girl when women didn't work unless their husband got hurt or died or was a drunkard.
Obama's mother married a black man at a time when she might have been murdered for that.
God bless and keep all three of them and the country.

I'm more surprised that Bush HASN'T been shot by some whacko than I would be at Obama getting shot...

If you've ever read blog comments from places like the Huffington Post, AirAmerica and KosDaily you'll find multiple instances of people wishing death, mocking assaults and even saddened by the lack of death in at least one instance(Cheney in Pakistan last year)...

Apparently, saying "I don't want a black guy in office" is shunned (as should be), but wanting a president dead based simply on political beliefs is A-OK..

There are some real whacko Clinton haters too. I've seen some regulars around some forums that must have a Clinton room in their basements where they keep their "Research"

I expect to see this sort of article. But I really give all of these folks credit. This campaigning thing looks really hard. The front runners on both sides deserve to be there I think. And I am sure they all realize there could be a nut behind every handshake. It must take some courage. Day in and day out.

The reality is that there are people that would seek to kill the president because he is black or she is a woman. (Yes, I have thought about this...)

We must remember that the President is the best protected person in the country. I'm sure that, or I should say that I HOPE that, each of the candidates has enough foresight to have considered this, and chose to move forward with a campaign.

All of the candidates are above average IQ and they are well aware of the risks of running and achieving office. As others have noted,Bill Clinton was and IS still hated and he is still among us. Bush is also hated yet still lives and carries out his duties every day. That said,Obama and Hilliary are well aware of the risks they must take. It would be unfair to say that politicians take these risks to attain power or gratify ego alone. I'm sure all of them believe they can make a difference in our lives and I salute all of them.

We all live in a time of uncertanty, this is especially true of POTUS candidates and it goes with the territory!
