Bush, Congress hit bottom in AP poll

Quote:
It's almost as if people can barely stand the thought of President Bush and Congress anymore. Bush reached his lowest approval rating in The Associated Press-Ipsos poll on Friday as only 30 percent said they like the job he is doing, including an all-time low in his support by Republicans. Congress' approval fell to just 22 percent, equaling its poorest grade in the survey. Both marks dropped by 4 percentage points since early January.

The dour public mood seems to chiefly reflect distress over the doddering economy, which has seen job cuts, financial market slides and real estate losses stoke recession fears. Bush's approval for handling the economy dove to 29 percent, a slide of 4 percentage points in a month and matching his low on that issue, with noticeable slumps among middle-income people, Southerners and city residents.

"He's spent billions of dollars on the war, and the economy here is suffering," said Ron Brathwaite, 41, a Democrat from Brooklyn, N.Y., who was interviewed in the poll. "If you're leading this country, you should start fixing within this country."

Bush and Congress have been overshadowed in recent months by a presidential campaign in which both parties' candidates have emphasized how they would change Washington — an implicit criticism of the president and the Democratic-led Congress. Even the leading Republican contenders have spent little time defending Bush, though they haven't attacked him frequently because he remains popular within the GOP.
I believe this poll, but I also find some public hypocisy on display here...

Huckabee is a Governor not in the Congressional loop, but has seen his hopes pretty much dry up...

That leaves 3 people to "clean up Washington"...

A senator, another senator, and another senator...

Understand how stupid that sounds?

The public believes that Washington and the people who run this country suck, so the choices they'll end up voting for are...the VERY SAME PEOPLE part of the system they claim sucks...

I don't take this poll seriously. I sense some manipulation here.

Is there any basis for this skepticism beyond convenience?

Quite frankly, the poll is consistent with other polls before it. From a variety of other sources.

For both the president and congress, I would echo that I am frustrated with the way things are going in Washington. We have the war with an ever-rising body count and debt. The deficit may have shrunk some, but it is still pretty large with the debt at all-time highs virtually unheard of. A variety of pieces of legislation being rejected that the American public does want (stem cell research, hate crimes legislation, etc, etc), and some legislation making progress that the American public does not want (telecomm immunity).
The economy shows signs of going in the crapper, but our politicians in office cannot bring themselves to honestly admit "recession". The fed cuts interest rates in unheard of moves, and the president and congress are sending out checks to Americans to help "boost" the economy, but nobody admits we ARE in a recession.

Quite frankly, I would have to ask you what the heck the majority of American people have that would "satisfy" us about our elected officials' performance. What should we be looking at that would make us happy when compared to the above problems?

Sad, but in some ways very true.
On the flip side, Obama IS talking about change. And while he is a senator, it's amusing that some point to his "inexperience" as a detraction.

While on the flip side, his inexperience should also count towards mitigating what you discuss above.

I remember a phrase (I believe Douglas Adams) that states that those who can be elected to office should by no means be allowed to serve. Those who would be best at serving their country in office often have no willingness to serve in office.
Colin Powell anyone?

Disagree...

As I've said on this forum a few times before...

"Experience" is NOT "Washington experience" that you speak of...I will gladly give extra consideration to someone with NO Washington experience IF they have executive experience elsewhere...

That's why I mentioned I would give a long look to someone like Jack Welch or Lee Iacocca...Actually being a LEADER outside of the Wahington circle shows experience a being a LEADER period. That helps in the determination of being the LEADER in the highest office...

Obama obviously has little experience in the Washington circle...It's his first term and he was never there beforehand...But he ALSO doesn't have any NON-Washington experience as far as being a LEADER either...He was a State legislator, not a Governor or Mayor...AND his non-political life shows no form of executive LEADERSHIP either...Even as a lawyer he was an associate and not an executive...

Experience matters but what matters more is the choice of staff.A President who carefully selects cabinet members can surround himself with 500 years of experience.

But there is nothing is Obama's history or announcements that shows that he will surround himself with experience...

He's running as the "new breed"...In other words, a NEW set of standards in which people with actual experience would shun...

"Let's bring in a crop of totally new blood with no idea how executive decisions work" is NOT my idea of the highest office...

Obama though he has little experience in Washington, I believe, echoes Rutherford Hayes' saying: he serve his party best who serves the country best.

Far from it...The opposite is happening...

But Obama has still to say to prove his self as the best candidate who has little exprience. And I think he is winning the hearts of the voters.
