It's amazing how the book becomes a "whole" by the end, and not just a series of anecdotal chapters.
Give me a few minutes...

I will try to figure out how to put on code to hide a spoiler....

redd might have to do it...

Edited to add:

I contacted Cnredd about spoilers and I will most likely get a good answer tomorrow. Let's give him until then.

In the meanwhile, if you question whether a response is a spoiler, look through chap 1-4 and see if the subject is mentioned. If it is not, then it would be best to limit you commentary.

I think that is giving his "sensitivity" and "artistic nature" too much credit. He is a "sensitive" child however I think it is his privileged upbringing that has created a sense of "entitlement" and it is this that makes his character the "weaker" character when compared to Hassan.

It's like the old saying about the tree that is watered daily having shallow roots and thus being weak and more prone to falling over. While a tree that wasn't spoiled with water grows deep roots.

Hassan has a stronger character. On some level even Amir is capable of recognizing that.

There is no doubt that he has a sense of entitlement. But is this something that he had control of as a youth? As an adult, yes, but as a child?

Spoiling in a material way does not make strong people. I agree.

In that sense, was he spoiled or was he simply not taught about the things that are truly important?

I think once you're old enough to start making decisions that lead you to doubt your very own character you have reached the point where you are now too old to blame your father so to speak. If Amir teases Hassan and then feels guilty about it can he possibly blame anyone else or his upbringing when he does it again?

Whether Hassan is or isn't more intelligent than Amir isn't the point. Amir thinks Hassan is more intelligent. Remember in Ch. 4 Amir says he took to reading Hassan less challenging things. He stopped reading him riddles when he realized Hassan was far better at solving them.

Default Adding spoilers

in order to add a spoiler that will look like this:

Spoiler

this is what you should do

put the word spoiler where I have put 'splr'

[splr] whatever the text is [/splr]

This will hide it from general veiw. If you reference tha chapter that the spoiler comes from, it would be useful for those who have not gotten to that point yet.

Default Chap 5 and 6 added.

Okay... The conversation is stalled, so it is time to add 5 and 6 to the discussion.

ch. 5 they find out the crazy mean kid likes Hitler. How's that for foreshadowing?
Amir admits, somewhat, that Hassan is a friend. More like a brother, really. He also realizes he snubs him when others are around. He also realizes how brave Hassan is. We realize Baba treats Hassan somewhat like a son and this makes Amir soooo jealous he's even coveting a harelip which is saying something.

***Though I gotta admit Joaquin Phoenix's harelip repair scar genuinely turns me on. It's incredibly sexy. I remember telling someone, "God that guys scar above his lip is so hot," and they were like, "Hey dumba$$ that's a harelip." Hot none the less. Yum. Anyway back to the book...***

Amir also tells Hassan he'll buy him a tv one day. He really loves his friend despite the jealousy and this comment about buying the tv shows that he sees him and Hassan's relationship as a strong one that will last in the future.

Chaper six all about the kite running. Sounds interesting. Glass string and what not. Never heard of it before....

That's all I got for these two chapters.

Ai this point everyone should have finished the book, I think. Unless there is an objection, we can discuss the whole thing.
