Yup..they were like frogs who were "comfortable" as the water slowly came to a boil. Others did not want to give up position and wealth that had been granted to them by the crown. It is amazing to see what people are more than willing to tolerate before they are motivated to cry out for freedom. The ever increasing taxes finally brought more on board but many were still willing to pay these taxes than fight what they believed to be an invincable force. What I love about the book is that it's not just a repeat of history,it brings the founding fathers to life with known dialog and interaction between the founding fathers. In that day the hardship of daily life was very difficult and yet they dedicated much of their time away from their farms and law practice at great loss of income to pursue a better way of life for us all.

I finished all 751 pages of John Adams. I was thrilled reading every page and it gave me a greater insight into one of our greatest Americans. As stated earlier,I prefer to read the book before seeing the movie.I don't subscribe to HBO during this time of year. The DVD will be available in June.

I highly recommend reading John Adams...

Thanks. I will ask the local librarian (there is only one ) to order it for me.
I am currently trying to get through a John McCain book.
But I'll definitely put that one on my list.

Well, it's definately a book I am looking forward to reading because I just finished watching the 7-part HBO miniseries with great interest. By the way, there are absolutely no sex scenes throughout the entire series, so take heart (okay one...but without any nudity at all, and totally appropriate being that Abigail Adams is meeting John Adams in France after a considerably long absence from one another). The DVD bonus features include a very interesting perspective called "Facts Are Stubborn Things" (something John Adams is being given credit to have said). This bonus feature is set up so that throughout the entire episode "facts" about the times and events being shown appear in banners. You read them as the episode plays.

The series was excellent in my opinion, so much so that David McCullough's book will be my next purchase!

I'd be intersted to learn if anyone else has seen the entire HBO series and whether they liked it or not.

I've finished the 751 page book and I have also seen the video. The book was excellent and as expected, far superior to the video in detail. The video skips tons of history and dialog. If history is your main interest, read the book.

I figured as much...the books are usually always better. Maybe always. But The DVDs came out and I couldn't wait so I opted to watch them first!
