Which is why there are specific forums for discussing such an issue that doesn't intrude on what a literary forum is about.

I think you'd be surprised, how the majority of people on this forum, actually don't fit your little box. The fact that they don't want to discuss a politically motivated book on the subject doesn't say a thing about what they may/may not know about the topic...It simply means that they do not wish to discuss this topic, yet again within another forum.

What is outrageous to myself is the fact that here we are on a POLITICAL online discussion forum, with MANY forums for discussing the issues you find important, yet you are insisting that your political standing MUST be also discussed in the same nature you use in other forums, within the literary forum as well. Without even understanding or accepting that the literary forum wasn't set up to discuss politics, but set up to discuss literary meaning instead.

You can't seem to seperate your politics from just simple reading for enjoyment and pleasure. You instead, are insisting you need yet another outlet to vent your political views on others and have the oppertunity to tear down those you feel 'aren't seeing it YOUR way'...

I'm wondering here, that if someone requested that a food forum be set up, how much would you be screaming when someone pointed out 'sorry, but discssuing/debating personal politics isn't what this forum was designed for'...Cause although one is food and the other is literary, those two forums were intended for discussions OTHER THEN politics.

What's equally outrageous is the fact that we didn't even get a chance to get the horse to the gate, and you shot the horse so to speak. Everything Redd was worried would happen, that we'd assured him wouldn't happen, YOU'VE managed to so with a simple thread about suggesting book titles to start the forum off with.

Good going kiddo. You've managed within a few hours of others asking for a forum to discuss great written works and what they mean to you, into a mud-slinging/insult throwing fest all on your own. Something the rest of us didn't want, cause we all knew that hotheads like yourself would do as you did...Which is rather then discuss a book, you'd be fighting your own little battle to support your own political views and disregarding other's feelings or regards in such matters...

It's sad that there's at least 7 forums designed specifically to address your issues and hold the discussions in...But you'd rather have yet another one, and you're willing to walk over anyone you see as standing in your way or a threat to your personal political views.

If such a thread as this one gets you foaming at the mouth and throwing fighting words, then I'm sure that those threads you've participated in where you said nobody was listening to you and you were having to repeat yourself so much? Seems to me they might have had good reason to put you on ignore. Cause even here, you were unable to keep your temper and discuss this in a rational, non-accusatory/aggressive manner...So the safe bet is you're even more aggressive and accusatory when particpating in the forums specifically designed for such discussions...

IP, KOS, and myself gave him our word, so to speak. It was because of the discussion that the three of us were having, that Redd decided to do this in the first place...And here we are, just simply discussing which book we'd all like to start off with, and already got one poster throwing personal insults and stuff...

I can't speak for IP and KOS even though I feel they'd agree with me. When I give my word about something, it's important to me to keep it. And I feel as if my word has been broken to Redd and I somehow let him down as well as everyone else that was involved in wanting this forum set up...
I don't necessarily feel that we broke out word to Redd. This is a situation where we figure out the self-policing that we are going to have to do.

Clearly, as part of this self policing we are going to need to come up with some general guidelines for the book club. Political works are obviously off limits, and we may have to actually DEFINE literature so that we are all on the same page. I don't mean to demean anyone, but I think that this is just part of the self-policing process.

As usual KOS, you're making sense. I agree 100%.

Those would deffinately fit in the 'modern literature' catagory I'd think...Although reading 'Valley of the Dolls' once years ago was about enough for me. LOL!!! Still, I know I can borrow my Mom's copy of it and guess I could suffer a re-read of it...Never know, perhaps it was the movie itself that put me off on the book...

Luckily, the book is even trashier than the film (which I have proudly attended my 10th revival theatre showing) - as is The Carpetbaggers.

I also have an original shooting script of Valley that I paid an absurd amount of money for on eBay LOL

I suppose that it would be wisest to start with a basic definition for LITERATURE:

Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1) - Cite This Source - Share This
lit·er·a·ture /ˈlɪtərətʃər, -ˌtʃʊər, ˈlɪtrə-/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[lit-er-uh-cher, -choor, li-truh-] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun 1. writings in which expression and form, in connection with ideas of permanent and universal interest, are characteristic or essential features, as poetry, novels, history, biography, and essays.
2. the entire body of writings of a specific language, period, people, etc.: the literature of England.
3. the writings dealing with a particular subject: the literature of ornithology.
4. the profession of a writer or author.
5. literary work or production.
6. any kind of printed material, as circulars, leaflets, or handbills: literature describing company products.
7. Archaic. polite learning; literary culture; appreciation of letters and books.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Origin: 1375–1425; late ME litterature < L litterātūra grammar. See literate, -ure]

—Synonyms 1. Literature, belles-lettres, letters refer to artistic writings worthy of being remembered. In the broadest sense, literature includes any type of writings on any subject: the literature of medicine; usually, however, it means the body of artistic writings of a country or period that are characterized by beauty of expression and form and by universality of intellectual and emotional appeal: English literature of the 16th century. Belles-lettres is a more specific term for writings of a light, elegant, or excessively refined character: His talent is not for scholarship but for belles-lettres. Letters (rare today outside of certain fixed phrases) refers to literature as a domain of study or creation: a man of letters.

Wow...you kids really took off with this idea last night!!! I am so excited about having this book club thing take off.

If I may suggest; I know this is a political discussion forum, but in this particular niche, I would like to see us stray away from ACTUAL politics for now. In fact, I would like to see the book club be more of a discussion and less of a debate. That's just my two cents.

As for book suggestions, I would like to suggest Wicked by Gregory Maguire.

Quote:
The novel is a political, social, and ethical commentary on what good and evil really are. It takes place in The Land of Oz, before Dorothy dropped in. The story centers on Elphaba, the misunderstood green-skinned girl who grows up to become the infamous Wicked Witch of the West. Gregory Maguire fashioned the name of Elphaba (pronounced EL-fa-ba) from the initials of Lyman Frank Baum, L-F-B. The story is divided into five different sections.

Unlike the popular 1939 movie and Baum's writings, this novel is not directed at children. It contains language and content which catches some readers by surprise.

Like minds IP. That's what I'm hoping we'll aim to accomplish with this little forum too.

And your book suggestion has me intrigued. Now I've another book to add to my list of 'got to buy'...You and KOS have come up with some good titles and topics.
