Saved by the dogs; local dog and owner survive coyote attack

LAS VEGAS (KSNV News3LV) — Barry Bannister spent forty years in the military. Nowadays he spends time hiking with both his and his friends' dogs. He says it helps ease his mind.

"It's my therapy is these dogs and the hikes. Takes your mind of everything," said Bannister.

He never thought his military combat training would come into play in the deserts of Nevada until late last year he almost lost one of his best friends. "I was hiking with the dogs and all of a sudden I hear my little black girl my Yorkie, crying," said Bannister.

Bannister first thought his dogs were playing rough, he was wrong.

"All of sudden coyotes hit us. They hit from all sides. They knew what they were doing, reminded me of a squad of marines in combat," said Bannister.

They had been ambushed.

"They bit her stomach, her diaphragm, her lung her spleen her face and her head," Bannister said.

His remaining 4-legged soldiers sprung into action.

"The Irish Wolf Hound and Ashley my German Shepherd took after them," Bannister said. "It's like every dog had a coyote on them, they were fighting the coyotes off," he continued.

The coyotes eventually ran away.

When the dust settled his Yorkie Mollie and another dog Blazer had been seriously wounded. That's when bannister's military training kicked in, he gave them first aid and rushed them to a hospital. Mollie had life-saving surgery.

"I was there for twelve hours," he said.

Mollie sports stitches on her neck but is ok. Blazer walks with a limp but is still chasing rabbits. "My concern is people are going to get hurt," Bannister said.

The Army vet wants to tell his story as a tale of caution to warn others of dangerous coyotes in the Calico Basin area.

"Be aware of your surroundings. If you hear a dog that sounds like a little puppy crying, get out of the area," Bannister said.

He says he no longer hikes with his dogs at Calico Basin because it's too risky.

Bannister credits his military training for being able to save his dogs and continue to enjoy their company on his daily hikes in safer terrain on Mt. Charleston.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife's website states if your animal is attacked by coyotes don't try to grab them because you might be targeted. They advise using a weapon like a walking stick or a trekking pole to break it up.

I hope someone treated the coyotes injuries. It's the little dogs that are at high risk. Not the dog in my avatar though, Tucker would make short work of 2 or 3 coyotes. I'll bet that Wolf hound and Shepard put the beat down on a few of them.

Man and two dogs honored for fighting off coyote pack - Story

Man and two dogs honored for fighting off coyote pack

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) -
A man and two dogs are being honored this week for fighting off a pack of coyotes and saving the lives of two smaller dogs.

Barry Bannister credits his four decades in the military for his gift to handle dogs.

“I have children but I don’t have no grandchildren, so they are my grandchildren!”

Bannister has two dogs of his own. He works for a friend and takes care of her eight dogs. So on any given day, he is with 10 dogs at a time. They all go on hikes daily.

One summer day in Calico Basin, disaster struck faster than Bannister could have ever imagined.

“Maybe 50 yards from the car and we were hit by a pack of coyotes,” said Bannister.

Bannister says there were so many coyotes, he didn’t have time to count them, but he estimates 12 coyotes.

“We went down this ravine and the coyotes surrounded us,” said Bannister.

Imagine Bannister and his 10 dogs completely surrounded by the pack. Seconds later, they attacked.

“Seconds, it was over in seconds,” he said.

The coyotes managed to grab the two little dogs and started to rip them to shreds. Bannister’s bigger dogs reacted.

“Fitz took the one (coyote), he chased the one of Molly,” he said. “And Ashley grabbed and killed the coyote that was (attacking) Blazer.”

The big dogs chased the coyotes off. They ran away. But it didn’t end there. The little dogs were clinging to life.

“I was trying to get the dogs in the car and save them!”

Bannister keeps an Israeli bandage with him at all times. When they got to the car, Bannister used the bandage to wrap one of the little dogs.

“It clots. I wrapped it around her and then put a tourniquet and it saved her life.”

Bannister sped across town to the hospital with all the dogs in the car. He rushed the little dogs into the emergency room. One of them had to undergo 12 hours of surgery.

“After the surgery, that’s when it finally hit me,” said Bannister. “It was rough during the surgery cause I thought I was gonna lose my little dog.”

Since the attack, Bannister does not go hiking in the Red Rock area anymore. He also carries a gun with him.

Bannister and his two hero dogs are receiving Red Cross Life Saving Awards Thursday morning.
