Yikes!!! It ended up well, but if that mama bear had decided that the lady in the truck was a threat to her cubs (since she was between mama and babies), it may have turned out BAD. All she had to do was turn and charge and she would have been in the back of that truck in a hot second. Glad it ended well, but that's NOT something I would recommend doing.

Black bears are very non-aggressive in general. But that was a momma with cubs, which makes them much more aggressive, defensive, and dangerous. I certainly would not have walked over there! But I'm sure their thinking with the truck was that they could always floor it at the first sign of aggression and get away from momma.

cf, my Dad told me about watching a mama bear charge a grapple skidder because it came between her and her babies. Some mama bears simply don't care what the threat is, they just react and attack.
