Did the Trump administration really expect a jury to criminalize basic human kindness?

Quote:
THE FIRST time federal prosecutors in Arizona put a humanitarian volunteer on trial for the unpardonable offense of providing food, water and a change of clothes to a pair of Central American migrants, this spring, a deadlocked jury failed to convict. The second time, there was no such ambiguity — a new jury this month took barely two hours to produce an acquittal, meaning the prosecutors were all but laughed out of court.
great day for humanity.

His “crime,” as described by Michael Bailey, the U.S. attorney for Arizona, was to drop by a small encampment known as the Barn, a gathering place for humanitarian workers just north of the Mexican border in southern Arizona, where he provided food, water and clothing for a pair of Central American migrants in January 2018. That fit the government’s puffed-up definition of “harboring” migrants, a felony that carries a stiff prison sentence. Sensibly, the jury didn’t buy it.
The prosecutor Michael Bailey, trying to gain further notice and favor by the tRUmp administration, chose to bend the definition of the law for his own political purposes. It was a disgrace.

Quote:
Bailey said "Although we're disappointed in the verdict, it won't deter use from continuing to prosecute all the entry and reentry cases that we have, as well as all the harboring and smuggling cases and trafficking that we have."
Yeah, I have a feeling this was the end to a series of huge defeats, and will indeed actually prevent the embarrassment and expense of this prosecutor interpreting the law in this manner again.

What the WaPo conveniently neglects to report the jury was drawn from the Progressive hot bed of Tucson. Jeff Bezo's vanity newspaper also fails to note the people the defendant helped are in the country illegally.

The simple fact is if the defendant hadn't decided to act as a vigilante but instead called ICE or the border patrol the illegal aliens would have been cared for without breaking the law.

Aiding and abetting is illegal.

even prisoners deserve water
it's not aiding and abetting; it's keeping someone from dying.

It's enabling and incentivizing bad behavior and it is illegal. Not sure what part of that you don't understand.

War crime? You are spouting gibberish.

There is no suggestion the illegal aliens should have been allowed to perish. The crime was that the activist didn't report them to the border patrol. Hysterical charges of ignoring human kindness or lacking compassion ignore the fact these activists are aiding and abetting human and drug smuggling as well as encouraging more people to break our immigration laws. It's not an issue of depriving illegals of humanitarian aid, the border patrol does that. The issue is with activists deciding they are above the law and a misguided jury encouraging others to do the same.

You know, I have said it a hundred times. There are millions of bleeding hearts in our country. Now what about all of them getting together and offering to adopt migrant families?

Is there anything wrong with that?

If Redstate offered to take on a family and care for their needs until they could become citizens, I would be all for it.

But there are very VERY small numbers of leftists, that are willing to put up their monies, or labors for things they believe in. They just want to force others to except what they want.

I agree with you to an extent. How about instead of offering to take in these illegal families, they adopt those that are trying to enter using the legal process and are waiting for an opportunity to come in. The illegals are simply trying to jump the line and come in ahead of those that are trying to get here legally.
