I will agree with your second sentence. But that doesn't necessarily mean public school is the answer.
well what is the answer? let them grow to be a burden on society? If you can't afford to take off to home school you can't afford private school either.
Every state made it very hard to home school till some lawsuit or something. The hoops you had to go through made it effectively illegal in Idaho yes. you could have your own curriculum but your child was tested in a school facility at your expense on THEIR curriculum. It's a lot better now and groups have managed to add sports and trade off subjects between parents. But you can't join one of these co-ops if you don't teach something.

I think to keep them from being a burden on society the curriculum needs to include things like aptitude testing to see what they are naturally good at.

I would also make financial responsibility classes mandatory. Also teach them decision making skills. People that are a burden on society make bad life decisions over and over again.

So, you are advocating for TEACHING children instead of INDOCTRINATING them? How dare you.

Yes, but only after they are taught about Gay sex, and Trans gender issues. Because we know that is the most important thing we can do for our children.

...

I personally really like the idea of vouchers that can be used to attend any accredited private school?

How about homeschooling CO-OPs?

How about trade schools that start students not inclined to go to college on a path to trade earlier?

How about apprenticeships?

Lots of ways to become educated.

I like that idea as long as there are available schools nearby. And as the mother of private and public schooled kids, I can tell you not all private schools are good or accredited. The best are probably Catholic. Each religious run school don't for get also has an agenda.

These are good ideas that need business involvement. If you train a majority of vo-tech kids to be welders or spray painters, you're wasting your money.
And some communities' leaders have a vested interest in keeping kids dumb.
I hope we never get rid of public schools. But I would like to see a real life vo-tech alternative. NY State used to have a plan where you could graduate a licensed nurse then go on to RN school or go to work right away as an LPN.
other occupations could be applied but you need community, school and business working together.

I firmly believe in vouchers. It's my belief that parents are far better equipped to know their kids needs rather than a one size fits all government.

The education system and its unions opposes this as it means competition for the monopoly. I think it would especially he the low income people since they have no real alternative to public schools.
