Default Bernie Sanders Makes Unions Sexy Again!

unions gave us labor day as a holiday, stopped child labor, week ends, 8 hour days
Democrats and Republicans have decimated unions in favor of their fat bribes by big corporations.

Everything you listed as something the Unions have done, was decades ago. Other than holidays, every worker protection is now a law. I have never argued the Unions served a purpose back in the day.

So, what protections do Unions provide in the current day?

Ahem, unions did none of those things, they campaigned for them a 100 years ago. There is a whole raft of laws governing worker treatment as well as Federal and state agencies devoted to worker protection.

Unions are given far more favorable treatment by government with things like antitrust exemptions and only occasional corruption investigation. The Obama administration bailed out the auto workers union with billions in taxpayer dollars, fat slices of equity and seats on the board of directors rewarding the unions for creating the highest labor costs in the industry. Unions need coddling by the government and fear mongering by rich Democrat politicians posing as the friend of the worker.

I read that as Bernie Sanders makes Unicorns sexy again for some reason. Which in my opinion would have been far more interesting.

Solidarity for rights. Employers belong to strong associations ; why do you think that is?
And when unions were battered in the eighties yes we did lose some rights/ laws WERE changed and it wasn't even announced broadly.
Minimum wage stopped increasing for 12 years skip 8 then stopped another 8.
That right there hurt our middle class. As wages stagnated on the minimal level they went down for more skilled work. With weak unions there was no competition for these tactics.

If I was stuck in a union, I would be stuck with the wages the union deemed that I was worth.
Fortunately, I negotiate my wages based upon my self-known worth and not the worth some union thinks of me. I make more money than any union worker that I know.

Salty, which exactly are these strong associations that employers belong to?

Companies compete with each other. Bush Beans are on the shelf right next to Heinz Beans. I prefer Bush. I'll pay the extra few cents for the difference. Not so with closed shops, There is no competition. You make 4 widgets/hour, you make 12. You get your $23,45/hour. That's what unions do. That's strong association.

Fact is, Salty, if companies got together and decided that all beans would cost $1.29 a can, that would be a monopoly and illegal.
