Right on the Mark: No Blood For Oil

Quote:
I'm surprised that we haven't heard the chant of "No blood for oil" concerning the Russian/Georgian conflict yet. I mean, seriously, what other reason does Russia have for going in to Georgia? Freedom for South Ossetia? Maybe if freedom means to include them with North Ossetia which is a part of Russia. Sounds like it could be the start of rebuilding the Soviet Union. Maybe a new Cold War?

If Russia had stopped before entering two Georgian cities, one of which is the capital, & occupying Georgian military bases I might believe they were interested in South Ossetia's freedom. This appears to have only served as a starting point to take over the rest of the country which has no desire to become a part of Russia. Why would Russia be so interested in the rest of Georgia? I suppose you'd have to find out what the rest of Georgia has that South Ossetia doesn't. And, that would be a major pipeline.

Has there been any condemnation of Russia for basically telling the United States that you're either with us or against us when demanding our government choose between them or Georgia? President Bush was called a cowboy for making such a demand to the world in fighting the war on terror. There were also rants against blood for oil concerning Iraq. Now, when another country appears to have no other reason than a pipeline for entering & occupying a neighbor the world seems to be mum about these issues.

While reading one article at the San Francisco Chronicle website whose headline was "Georgia Pipeline Is Key To U.S. Support" I found it interesting that they failed to mention the pipeline in regards to Russia's invasion. Support for South Ossetia's Independence from Georgia is one thing. But, continuing to go further into Georgia doesn't appear to serve any purpose other than rebuilding the Soviet Union or controlling a major pipeline. It's even more disturbing knowing that Georgia has agreed to a Russian-French plan to settle the conflict. Yet, Russia marches on.

The President has taken a firm stance & is sending aid to Georgia. This move appears to have the support of both presidential candidates. It'll be interesting to watch this unfold & what political posturing we'll witness over the next few weeks. I am less concerned about the pipeline than I am about the rebuilding of the Soviet Union. We could avoid any issue with the pipeline if we really wanted to just by having a sensible domestic energy policy. However, we may not have any control over a new Soviet Union & a new Cold War that would likely result from such an invasion/take-over & Russia's recent military exploits. Instead of playing politics here at home I hope our elected officials take this situation serious & come up real solutions. And, stand united behind those solutions.

You're not going to hear the infamous chant...

It doesn't serve their partisan purpose...

Никакая кровь для нефти !
I think the "infamous chant" is repeated by more people repeating the chant in condemnation than by people saying it in earnest.

I really haven't paid attention to the partisan pundits on this one.
I would think that since Republicans can't blame Democrats and Democrats can't blame Republicans for Russia going into Georgia, it would be quieter.

"The President has taken a firm stance & is sending aid to Georgia."
It's humanitarian aid.
Georgia has made a couple of "efforts" to try and entangle us in the conflict, but Bush has been shrewd in keeping some distance. (At least in the ways that could get ugly very fast.)
Russia is saber-rattling towards us, but I don't think anybody is taking them seriously. At least not as for the complaints on current U.S. action.
(But then again, like I said I haven't been listening to the pundits...)

(Incidentally, that phrase was "No blood for oil" when I plugged it into a Russian translator. But reversing it comes out "Any blood for oil"... )
