The divide has grown significantly since Reagan, and the majority of the divide growth has been on the Republican side.

When Dems under Bush fought back and stopped his retirement change initiatives, I don't recall them denying that it was THEM who was doing it.
With Repubs under Obama, Repubs fight back and blame Obama for their refusal to compromise.

Obamacare was passed without a single Congressional Republican vote. Senate Democrats refused to take 50 House passed reform bills up for consideration. But it is the Republicans who are unwilling to compromise.
Obama has issued petulant veto threats for everything from bills offering to delay Obamacare to continuing resolutions to fund the goverment. But the inaction is all due to Republicans.
Harry Reid declared the Federal Government doesn't need a budget for years. He decided to discard the filibuster for nomination confirmations. But, it is Republicans who cannot compromise.
Obama announces his intention to bypass Congress, Democrats give him a standing ovation for shredding the Constitution. But Republicans need to make concessions.
