The left-wing fetish for increased taxes appears to be predicated upon the article of faith that higher taxes equals more revenue to the federal government.

It is an assumption that many of us simply do not share...

Except that we did raise taxes a little bit last year and revenue did go up, which helped to lower the deficit. Not faith, but fact.

Several factors have contributed to the strong improvement in the nation's near-term fiscal picture. They include an improving economy and a mix of fiscal restraint -- primarily, the expiration of stimulus measures, the imposition of across-the-board budget cuts known as the sequester, and tax increases on high-income households during the 2013 fiscal year, which ended September 30.

The assertion that "several factors," including "tax increases," have helped to decrease the annual deficit, is an opinion--not a fact-based observation...

we haven't actually raised taxes in a long while -we did let cuts expire- (? I haven't looked this up lately ??)
but we need to and we need to cut.
so far our deficit has been reduced.
dems dont like cuts and gop's dont like cuts but fact is both have given up something to help get us to a balanced book. and if we cut everything to the bone we will still need to raise taxes. that will probably have to come in during a Republican administration for political reasons. but it is going to have to be done sooner or later. we cant live on air and promises.

its not an opinion that an increase in your income will help balance your budget.

It would be far more accurate to note that it is not a mere opinion that increased revenue will help balanced your budget. This is certainly true, all other factors being equal.

But I have a substantial problem with the flippant assumption that higher taxes equals increased revenue...
