Got that?...

It was NOT McCain "FIRST"...It was McCain "in move similar to Democrat Barack Obama’s last month"...

Obama pledged public financing...

THEN McCain pledged public financing...

THEN Obama broke his pledge while McCain kept his pledge...

You're trying to move the goalposts by pointing to the PRIMARIES, but that's NOT the issue...The issue is the GENERAL ELECTION...

Enough of the fun house mirror techniques...Just admit McCain stuck to his pledge and Obama was a poopy pants liar...Or does your ideology forbid it?...

Just admit that they are both poopy pants liars and we can call this done...

Right, let's "compromise" by accepting the revisionist history depicting Obama as principled for breaking his promise to use public financing.

I love this type of post. It's about the only thing you really have on Obama so you hold on to it like a life jacket. Romney's principles have changed on everything. He has lied over and over but you really have Obama on this.

Not too bad. I'd add isolating the donors from the candidates to minimize the impact of the money on the candidates. Keep the list of donors/amounts private until it's longer an influence on the candidate.

(however...coyote that I am I like pretty shiney things like gauntlets...I'll trade ya a slice of pizza for it )
I'm still developing this, but basically established an election fund that isolates the donors/amounts from the candidate. The only thing that anyone outside of the fund administrator knows is the total outstanding balance in the account. Not perfect, but it's a start.

An interesting concept but - I'm not sure. I think the public has a right to know who is donating if it's unrestricted in amounts and really - that is where I have problems - unlimited amounts and no disclosure on top of outside money flooding into local elections.

I don't know exactly what the solution would be but I'm tending towards public financing - candidates start with a level playing field, then it's up to them to make a case to their voters. It seems with all these PACS and Super PACs its gotten all out of proportion and it just keeps rising.

I can't help but wonder - if you took all those campaign donations, how much of the deficit could you pay down?

True, but change will never occur if no one stands up and take the first step. It is one thing to talk about it; it is another to do something about it.

I understand your philosophy. Obama is doing nothing illegal, and that is fine. I respect that. But it is a bit hypocritical to publicly call out something and make promises in regards to campaign financing and then do the opposite.

Both sides are guilty of this. Obama is hardly the only one engaging in this sort of act.

I have not thought out this idea thoroughly enough to form a solid opinion, but I kind of like the thought of having a hard cap on campaign donations like some sports have a salary cap. It evens the playing field and forces candidates to go by their past record, ideas and visions for the future and so on as opposed to who simply has the most money. Whatever dollar cap is decided upon, that is it. You would not be allowed to accept or use any more money after you hit your hard cap.

What about candidates that do not receive the hard dollar limit while their opponent receives the full amount? That defeats the purpose of the hard limit.

Political campaigns like military campaigns are by definition carried out to create an unequal playing field.
