Default Gov. 'Blunt Talk' Rendell (and other topics)

From my own state...

Gov. 'Blunt Talk' Rendell (and other topics)

Quote:
Gov. Ed "Don't Call Me 'Fast Eddie' " Rendell met with the editorial board of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette last week to talk about his latest budget. But before turning the meeting over to his number-crunchers, our voluble governor weighed in on the primary fight between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama and what the Illinois senator could expect from the good people of Pennsylvania at the polls:

"You've got conservative whites here, and I think there are some whites who are probably not ready to vote for an African-American candidate," he said bluntly. Our eyes only met briefly, perhaps because the governor wanted to spare the only black guy in the room from feeling self-conscious for backing an obvious loser. "I believe, looking at the returns in my election, that had Lynn Swann [2006 Republican gubernatorial candidate] been the identical candidate that he was --well-spoken [note: Mr. Rendell did not call the brother "articulate"], charismatic, good-looking -- but white instead of black, instead of winning by 22 points, I would have won by 17 or so."

I know I have a habit of sometimes zoning out in these meetings, but it sounded to me like Mr. Rendell had unilaterally declared Pennsylvania to be Alabama circa 1963. Was he suggesting that Pennsylvanians are uniquely racist in ways that folks in the states Mr. Obama has won so far aren't? By the way, Mr. Obama won Alabama on Super Tuesday, thank you very much!

What accounts for Mr. Rendell's overweening confidence that, no matter what, he'll always find a way to overcome the odds by at least 17 points even in a racist commonwealth, but that Mr. Obama can't?

If Mr. Rendell, a Clinton backer, is right about Pennsylvania's racial attitudes, maybe we should get a new state slogan. How about: "You've got a friend with a pointy white hood in Pennsylvania"?
Although the content may hold a grain of truth, this is an obvious attempt to disauade Obama support from a guy VERY supportive of Hillary...

"Don't bother because the racist people here won't let you win."...

Notice he doesn't mention any black voters who would vote for Obama based on nothing more than because he's black?...What about them Eddie?...

He(fast Eddie) is just plain spoken. He probably knows or at least thinks he knows his state well.
I have encountered a lot more racism in the north in the past 20 years than in the south where the issues were brought out in the open however painful. And because I sound like a southerner, people tend to assume I won't mind them using language they probably don't use outside their own family.
As an example, a few weeks ago I heard a man say to his dining partner,
"Well we have a choice in this election between a cult member, a ni___r, an old man, and a liar."
The above conversation was overheard in Washington-a progressive?-state.

Agreed, but my point is this race is going to have an element of prejudice in it no matter how people try to avoid it.
Not only prejudice against blacks but I've heard a lot of "The world's not ready for a woman leader" to which my inevitable question is "have you ever heard of Golda Meir or Margaret Thatcher?"
Also the age factor is a factor.
Sorry about the hammer to the head, but it was an excellent opportunity to use that smiley and I couldn't pass it up!

That's a given, but wait 5 months...

Once the candidates are a lock, someone will ask McCain a question about race (or gender)...

Nomatter what the answer, you'll hear the Left start the inevitable "There goes McCain discussing race!...Just like I knew the Republicans would do!!!!"...

And they'll pretend everything happening during the Democratic primaries never happened...

I would vote for Thatcher right now if she was a candidate...

I would be happy to vote for a QUALIFIED woman...Hillary ain't it...

I would be happy to vote for a QUALIFIED black person...Obama ain't it...

I want the eventual winner to be a good president...and if they're black or a woman, that's a bonus...

What I DON'T want is the eventual winner chosen BECAUSE they are black or woman, then crossing your fingers and hoping that being a good president is a bonus...

I think, America with their highest respect of democracy will understand better. Voting an American-African candidate like Obama is not an issue here but the leadership and the vision of each candidate
