the road it will continue to go down in reguards to citisenship, stewardship, responsibility-the "Village" is not what it used to be. People never used to get too nosey about other peoples' affairs (and that had good and bad points, I'll admit), but they did take it upon themselves to assume the parents of a child would appreciate a phone call if the kid was seen heading for trouble. Granted, we don't have the "community" anymore or at least rarely. But the community was an extended family of sorts. All kids knew someone might see them, so most thought twice about going over the edge. So it's cock eyed to say it takes a villiage, because we don't have the villiage anymore. A big part of community cohesiveness was the networking moms did with other moms. Like their counterpar -the businessmens' lunch, those coffee clutches and telephone conversations helped to improve living conditions, promoted safety in the home, brought the latest medical findings to the forefront!I think a lot of us would like to get that villiage back or construct something like it. But unless you want to live in destitute poverty, both parents have to work. I would like to see a "Just Stay Home" movement for women (or men) who feel they are better suited to housewifery or part time only work! Now that we've got some stuff out of the way-like-if you do work you are entitled to equal pay, I think it's time to take a hard look at why it evolved that women stayed home in the first place. Could it be nature picked them as best suited (usually) for the job? And honoring mothers is something we as a society should get back to in full force. I could go on, but.....

I never bought the "It takes a village" slogan,it takes good parenting! My wife and I made financial sacrafices,I preferred that she not work until our kids graduated high school. She also believed that our kids needed a mother at home. Result..we have two grown children who have never once been arrested. They have never used drugs and they are both college graduates.
Unfortunatly,we never got that cottage we wanted or the 48 ft sailboat we dreamed about owning but we have two wonderful and highly successful kids and we would not trade that for anything..

Some of their kids are in rehab and others have quit high school. Some of their kids are on their 3rd marriage and they have not reached the age of 35.I blame some of these parents, they got ahead financially at the expense of their children, they know this to be true but they remain in denial.

Couples today maybe need a plan. I know ladies who worked only till they bought furniture for their house or something and then stayed home. But they must have communicated with their husbands on goals and worked on stuff as a team? Something I've noticed is people used to plant a garden even if they lived in town. They don't do that any more and I fear this complete dependency on mass production. Look at the latest news about the beef industry and you'll see why. But the depression era folks parents knew that every little bit helps but failed to pass it on to their kids. I think also people who were children during the depression were just so tired of making do that they wholeheartedly embraced the new gadgets and quick meals and air conditioning etcetera. Now all that stuff is ingrained in society. It's good for commerce, maybe, but at the expense of people knowing how to really survive. There's my 0.02 cents! ![]()
