Susan Moller Okin: Is Multiculturalism Bad for Women?
Unfortunately, Susan Moller Okin has passed away, but she was an outspoken advocate for true liberal values.
IMO, what has happened over the last three or four decades is that multiculturalism has supplanted liberalism as the dominant political philosophy of the left, and the critical differences between the two is that liberality relies on an understanding of principles that relate to the individual, while Multiculturalism is simply a dogmatic mindset where the individual is discounted, and group rights are elevated above all else.
As far as political theory is concerned, one of the defining differences between liberal and conservative is the attitude towards social order vrs social justice. Liberals place more value on social justice while conservatives seek to CONSERVE social order (the etymology of the term here). Multiculturalism has thrown a monkey wrench into the definitions as far as these terms are concerned, since it is based upon conserving social order -- except instead of conserving OUR social order, it elevates the conservation of OTHER social orders to primacy, including those that are archly regressive. Conversely, if modern conservatives are wanting to conserve our own social order against this illiberality, what they are wanting to conserve is our western, liberal society.
I think we need a new language, myself, because if the internet is any indication, there are few actual liberals left. Instead, you have a bunch of babbling multiculturalist fundies who do not base their opinions on any sort of liberal values, but simply on conforming to groupthink. THis is especially true for most of western Europe, but has infected the U.S. left as well.
