The things is that according to Japanese tradition, the person of lower stature always bows lower than the one of higher stature. The Emperor gives what is expected, a small head nod and Pres. Obama bows LOW. I don't think that he's doing it out of anything other than ignorance of tradition, but it still looks bad.

Once again, let's read what the New York Times said about Cliton's "almost bow"...

Quote:
It wasn't a bow, exactly. But Mr. Clinton came close. He inclined his head and shoulders forward, he pressed his hands together. It lasted no longer than a snapshot, but the image on the South Lawn was indelible: an obsequent President, and the Emperor of Japan.

Canadians still bow to England's Queen; so do Australians. Americans shake hands. If not to stand eye-to-eye with royalty, what else were 1776 and all that about?...

...But the "thou need not bow" commandment from the State Department's protocol office maintained a constancy of more than 200 years. Administration officials scurried to insist that the eager-to-please President had not really done the unthinkable.
A non-Obama president ALMOST bowing?..."unthinkable"...

Obama president TOTALLY bowing subserviantly?...No articles even on the subject..."shhhhhh!!"...

This is the second times it's happened, so you gotta be REALLY ignorant...

I don't think he's ignorant at all...

As I've said before, Obama actually dislikes America...His bowing is showing that he offers America up as a "beta male" for his perception of this country's past grievances...

Akihito assumed the throne on Jan. 7, 1989. Within weeks he began a series of formal expressions of remorse to Asian countries for Japan's actions during his father's reign.
Sounds to me as if both these great men have humility, something hard to find today.

Obama was being deferential to the hosting country's customs.

I guess some ignorant *******s would have him ride up there on a mustang and wipe the **** off his boots on the Empress's carpet.
Oh Ye of the small mind.

...Which is breaking all State Department protocol...

...AND "being defertial to the hosting country's customs" is clearly NOT the case when dealing with the Japanese Emperor...

prime Minister Ehud Ohlmert

King of Morocco

Dick Cheney

Prime Minister Slovenia

President of South Korea

President Khazikstan

Prime Minister of India

Vladimir Putin

Now here's Obama

Should we be proud of the last 8 years?

Should you base your analysis of the current president NOT by his own actions but by the actions of others?...

I think Hiedi has a potentially good point.

I love it. cnredd shows a picture of Obama bowing and underneath the picture it says. "You get the respect that you give" Funny ain't it. Ya know nobody sees this as any big deal except people who already don't like Obama. I don't see the issue. Showing respect for someone does not diminish you. Who ever said it did is wrong.

And comparing Cheney to a human being is even more wrong. And what is even funnier is that I would bet none of you made a peep when Bush kissed and held hands with the Saudi king. Or gave Merkel a backrub. Or told a blind guy to take off his sun glasses. Or asked a handicapped guy to stand up. But a POTUS shows respect for another leader we have almost no issues with and you are all wound for sound.

I think some people need to look in themselves to see the real issue here. And it ain't Obama's greeting.
