Power Outage Dangles Six Flags Visitors Over Arlington

Quote:
Six Flags Over Texas reopened Sunday, one day after the theme park shut down because of a power outage that left thrill seekers helplessly stranded on rides.

The theme park lost power around 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon -- in some cases leaving visitors dangling mid-ride.

Park patron Audrey Gonzalez said her ride came to an abrupt halt and when she and her friends looked around they noticed all the other rides had stopped too.

Another adrenaline junkie said she got stuck on the parachute ride and her friends used a cell phone to record her dangling about three feet off the ground.

"I was there for about 30 minutes," Bianca Luciano said.

A backup power system kicked in just after the outage, allowing the park to unload the rides and shut them down. The rides were shut down until main power was restored about two and a half hours later.

The cause of the outage is unknown.
A similiar thing happened to me when I was young...

I had no problems with rides...until I was about 10...

I was on a roller coaster called "The Runaway Train" in Wildwood, NJ...We weren't high up; I doubt the thing was higher than 60 feet...But the caboose went on fire at the top and left us stranded for 45 minutes (Thank God it wasn't a loop ride)...We waited scared out of our minds when they got the thing to roll backwards and back down...

To this day I'm deathly afraid of rides...It's my krytonite...I've spend 4 years as a pro-wrestler, been on plenty of airplanes, survived an accident that totaled the car and almost cost me my life, and have had my share of scrapes, brawls, and mishaps...

...and I can't get more than 15 feet high on the ferris wheel before I have a panic attack...

So what did Obama have to do with this?

I am with you though. I used to paint bridges as a young teen with my dad. I can dive 100 ft. down in the water and work for hours. And I fly around the world.
But I am nervous anymore on a twenty foot ladder. I know its all in my head. But thats where I live.

I got stuck on a rollercoaster at Geuaga Lake when I was a kid.
We were going up the first big hill...
You know, when the coaster "clinks" up on the chain --- clink, clink, clink...
The head car had just reached the top & the thing just stopped.
We all had to get off & walk down the steps.
I was maybe 12 years old then.
I was freaked out but love rollercoasters today.
Cedar Point is my favorite amusement park.

You don't remember this?...

remember Clemonton Park a couple of years later?...the only rides I went on were the Tilt-A-Whirl, The Scrambler, & the bumper cars...

I refused to go on anything that went too far off of the ground...

Side note -

Clemonton Park was a trip from our school, where my mom was heavily involved...

We got on the Tilt-A-Whirl, and either my mom or one of her friends asked the guy running the ride to make it go exceptionally fast because they wanted to see if he could get one of their other friend's wig to fly off...

Anyone wonder where I get it?...

I went just the opposite direction. As a kid, I HATED heights. Then I got a job building pole barns. When you have an even number of posts across the end of a barn, you nail up a 2x10 or 2x12 as your end rafter. This means that you have to nail together the ends of the rafters at the peak. Most of the time this is pretty simple (stand on the scaffold and pop a couple nails in), but one time we were building a cutting horse arena (BIG-ASS building) and the boss decided that he didn't want to pay $300 for the scaffolding to reach the peak (since we were only going to use it once). He asked me if I'd shimmy out to the end of the 2x12 (since I was the lightest guy on the crew) and nail the peak off. Being 20 years-old and having the machismo that goes with that age, I said "Sure, no problem." I was about 30' off the ground hanging on a 2" wide board spanning about 12' from the post, holding on with only my legs (one hand had the hammer, the other hand the nails). I've never had a problem with heights ever since.
