I can't tell you how sick of "Flashback Friday" I am. I LIVED through the 80s as an adult (radio & rock & roll bands all a part of it). I know for CERTAIN that there were more than 20 good songs in that decade! Keeripes! I mean "Walking on Sunshine," "Love Shack," and "Material Girl" are all good songs but for GAWDSAKES radio people--dig up a few more!!!
I stopped listening to radio music about 5 years ago...It's CDs or sportstalk in my car now...Live365 Internet Radio - Thousands of Free Online Radio Stations when I'm at work...

Thanks for the link! I'm going to send it to my work email and check it out. For me the music is the most disappointing part. It all began homogenizing/boringizing when the FCC de-regulated in the way early 80s, which paved the way for a tiny handful of corporations to own most every radio station everywhere. Before the final effects of that were felt it was a lot of fun when travelling to tune into different stations and hearing a true variety of music and presentations thereof.

I think there are still some very talented and entertaining on-air personalities--even in the medium-sized city where I live. But the main reason I listen (the music) is the biggest disappointment.

There was lots of good music in the 80s.. but most of it wasn't being played on mainstream radio.

The bands that call themselves "punk" and "alternative" these days only WISH there were 1/10th as cool as what was going on underground in the 80s.

But I agree with you on the 80s pop thing.... most of it was just audio puke. It's a bit ironic, but thanks to my teenaged son, YouTube and other sources for checking out music, I'm in to more new stuff now than I was 20 years ago.

I find the homogeneousness of radio and newspapers to be incessantly and horrifically annoying.

True to a point.

I get a lot of my news from sources all over the world. This is useful.

At the same time, almost all of the reporting that takes place in the US sounds alike. The bloggers, remember, are going on the news that they get from other sources.

It concerns me that a lot of people are getting a very limited veiw on not only the news, but on opinions, books etc.

Many have the internet, but if they are only going to AP, Reuters and the other standard outlets, they are being spoonfed.

I agree that there was a lot of really great music that didn't get a lot of airplay then. And like you--I pretty much want to hear new stuff now as opposed to the same handful of old stuff ad nauseum. But I'd like to hear more of the new stuff too! The play lists are way too restrictive.

Those are the same folks who (in a previous generation) took the free beer to vote for good old whats-his-name.

But there are new underground sites and video blogs every day. I knew about Larry Craig way before he made his big boo-boo. It was news in certain circles. One thing I do is subscribe or at least view a lot of different strokes.
Muslim American groups, White Supremacists, abortion pro and con news letters, young and the restless (myspace), British online microbiology news; I get a physician's newsletter. Churches sites are very interesting, and music music music! Belong to Gospel for Asia News too.

Someone once said if you want to really know what's going on you gotta read the New York Times and the Houston Post and the truth is some where in the middle.

I'm not saying my brain works so good it can still disseminate all of it every day. I wish the web had been invented about 20 yrs ago! But what does waft its way in there nowadays is simply amazing.
