Since Germany is a NATO ally (and, presumably, an exemplar of the free world), is it really reasonable to say that it should have a "perspective" on the matter, entirely divorced from its free-world commitments?

So looks like they did and voiced it in talks with the Biden administration. As evidenced by his reversal.

Germany is not just another NATO ally, despite having the second largest economy in the alliance it's the leader of the deadbeats refusing to meet its defense spending obligations under the NATO treaty. Just like the German promise to go green in 2050 the Germans promise to try meeting their treaty obligations by some far off date.

Under Biden’s America Last foreign policy the US taxpayer shoulders the burden of German national defense against the threat of Russian aggression while they enrich Putin's autocratic regime and make the economy of the NATO lynch pin dependent on the whims of the Russian dictator. It's a win-win for Putin but more importantly for Biden it's a lose-lose for the US.

(I am beginning to think that Germany---like Turkey--is rather questionable as a NATO ally.)

Bottom line is, Biden is Putin's sock puppet and bitch rolled up into one.

Turkey was taken over by a dictator. Germany is more democratic.

they have a hard right wing and a rising left and everything in between. If we'd like them to remain democratic maybe we shouldn't take away their main source for heating other than to have unbreathable air. That may give rise to a fascist.

You are saying, then, that Germany would not have any reliable source for heating, if it were not for a marriage of convenience with a totalitarian state--and an avowed enemy of the West?

Note: Simply because liquid natural gas from the US--an ally--is "more expensive" and "volatile in price," you see no reason to prefer purchasing from an ally over purchasing from an enemy?

There are currently 30 coal-fired power stations in Germany and they already get that coal from Russia. the pipeline is 90% complete. What can I say?
Would I rather they get it from us? Sure. But it doesn't look feasible for them.
I hope though we do conserve our now abundant natural gas (not export a lot) to get us over the hump and be a back up to alternatives. That is what Boone Pickens was advocating before he died and he was a man who knew about fossil fuel and windmills.

Presumably, the German government does not consider it "feasible" because it would cost its citizens more.

Can you say cynicism?
