Default Why Donít Americans Trust Experts Anymore?

I have found this phenomena fascinating in recent years. I don't know who has the complete answer but this sheds a little light on a quite new trend in society.

1.Experts can be wrong. They don't know everything.New information may have came out that expert is not familiar with. Its why we get second or even third opinions when we go to doctors.

2.Experts can be politically or financially motivated. Just look at criminal trials for example. The prosecution brings in their experts to testify on the stand on behalf of the prosecution and the accused brings their experts to the stand to testify on behalf of the accused. The same thing with the man made global warming fairy tale. Those who believe in the man made global warming fairy tale pay experts to say what their side believes and those who don't believe in the man made global warming fair tale pay experts to say what their side believes.

So Americans aren't stupid enough to just blindly agree with any expert.

There are experts on BOTH sides of EVERY issue.

The question should be why do we not let them debate in the public square
and defend their position?

Also, why are some experts censored, while others are promoted?

THAT is a question that I would like answered. Let's let all experts give their opinions and possibly even in a debate style format. When the left shuts down one side of the argument, they can no longer claim they will follow the science. Science does not come to a consensus and then quit pursuing the truth.

but you still go to a doctor not a neighbor who watcged a voodoo movie once

yes new science is discovered all the time. yet we don't have a do it yourself hip replacement aisle at home depot.

I'm not about to watch a 17 minute U Tube video based on your statement of nothing.

I don't trust so called experts because they tend to lie.

Speaking for myself,
Short answer, I do trust experts.
I trust experts to present the evidence they have for their pronouncements.
For them to honestly and openly debate with other experts of different perspectives on the subject at hand. And for them to be honest about the range of certainty they can have on the particular subject they are talking about.

Then i expect them to back off and let people make up their own minds on how they will act on the information presented.

.....
When an expert presents --what i can see even as a non-expert-- only selective evidence. And ignores, or worse, actively suppresses real evidence counter to their claims.
I don't trust them.

When an expert's conclusions --from what i can clearly see as a non-expert - cover far more ground than the evidence would suggest.
I don't trust them.

When an expert's conclusions are --what i can clearly see as a non-expert - mainly defended by appeals to "group/'expert' consensus" rather than evidence.
I question the conclusion, and don't trust them.

the guy makes some good points initially and describes "regular" or "normal" distrust or questioning of the gov't and experts.
But as he goes on he seems to reveal what he really means is that people should simply follow lock step with the major consensus of experts in power at the time. And generally regulate those who question them into the category of narcissist, cranks and tribalist.

While I'd agree that the tribalism aspects of many science questions has captured a lot of people who frankly don't take much time to really look at much evidence.
Confirmation bias is very real and is extremely difficult to address, and difficult for most people to admit in themselves.
Still, with that said, pointing out that some people's opinions are based on tribalism is not a defense of any scientific position. Much less the scientific consensus which itself has aspects of tribalism.
...

The guy says he and other experts don't want to play the "gotcha game".
Where someone points out a REAL flaw in a consensus scientific view at hand. And then says ... you can't trust ALL of that feild.
Seems to me that's a bit of an exaggeration on his part.
the GAME of science is if you are presented with evidence that contradicts your claims, then you REBUT the evidence, or narrow or modify your claims to include the evidence, or you admit the claim was false.
And I know of no one who completely dismisses ALL of a scientific field becasue of a few GOTCHAS.
But i know of many in consensus proponents that want everyone to shallow WHOLE every pronouncement from the lips of consensus experts as gospel that should not be questioned.

this guy says he as an Expert in Russia was challenged by some kid that proceeded to tell him what Russia was really like. I'd agree that that kind of arrogance is a real problem. the lack of humility of us lay folks can be ridiculous. And can be dangerous.
But again from there he slides into the idea that people should just believe the experts and the gov't becasue they have our best interest at heart.
And it's outrageous to think that they might be mistaken and crazy to think they may be acting more on personal or biz interest.
and he pronounces that good the politicians have our best interest at heart if they ignore the people and just listen to the consensus experts.
He seems pine for the days when people just lined up for every shot and went off to war by simply trusting the word of the gov't and experts.
While he makes some good points it seems to me he's not really looking for a conversation, he's looking for conversions.
