Elizabeth Warren Announced a Plan to Ban Private Prisons. Then Their Stocks Tanked.

Quote:
Here is a very small but telling sign of Elizabeth Warren’s growing momentum in the Democratic primary: Investors are now taking her seriously enough that her policy plans can affect stock prices.

On Friday morning—at 9:17 a.m., before markets opened, to be precise—Warren tweeted out her newest proposal, which would ban the use of private prisons in the United States. As she put it in a Medium post:

Quote:
There should be no place in America for profiting off putting more people behind bars or in detention. That’s why I will shut down the use of federal private detention facilities by ending all contracts that the Bureau of Prisons, ICE, and the U.S. Marshals Service have with private detention providers. And I will extend these bans to states and localities by conditioning their receipt of federal public safety funding on their use of public facilities.

One key thing to note about this plan is that Warren wouldn’t need Congress to execute all of it—after all, federal contracts are handled by the executive branch. If you’re trying to price in the possibility of a Warren presidency (or a Democrat who is likely to follow Warren’s policy lead), this is the sort of proposal you really need to pay attention to.

And it appears Wall Street was, in fact, reading. As Bloomberg notes, stocks for private prison companies such as CoreCivic and Geo Group Inc. tumbled Friday.
Quote:
Here’s the little cliff for the Geo Group, which as of publication was down more than 7.5 percent.

Quote:
And here’s CoreCivic. Watch out below!

Good

Good
Looks like a good time to buy their stock. Private prisons are not going anywhere and Elizabeth Warren will never be president.

Yup. The market runs on fundamentals. The public buys and sells on emotion. Investors give the public what they want.

That's all you need to know to be a successful trader. I'll watch these two for a couple days. If they firm up by Wednesday or Thursday, I might take a shot.

Meanwhile the market stayed stable today. After a rise over the past few days.

You're correct. Injun' Liz is polling 10%. Private prisons aren't going away.

Injun' Liz vs Traitor Trump

has a nice ring to it.

I agree with her that private prisons need to be banned. Sending someone to prison should be motivated by the crime that person did and whether or not the judge feels that person doesn't deserve another chance. Not because of profits and lock up quotas. However because I disagree with her on most of the other stuff she supports I will not vote for her.

Good

The President does have the authority to ban the use of private prisons related to federal crimes but does not have the authority to ban state authorized private prisons.

All private prisons need to be banned. Private enterprise should not be profiting from the incarceration of people. The prison system should be about rehabilitation and reducing the number of people that are incarcerated. Private prisons work under exactly the opposite criteria where the more prisoners the better and the longer they spend in prison the more money the investors make.

The US, "The Land of the Free", holds the dubious distinction of having the highest per capita incarceration rate of any country. There's something wrong with this picture. We need to reduce and eliminate as many crimes as possible where incarceration is the penalty for violating the law. No one, for example, should ever have been sent to prison for smoking marijuana or having a small amount (e.g. less than a pound) in their possession, or for having a couple of plants to supply their personal needs. The different incarceration guidelines for powder cocaine and crack cocaine were an injustice and we shouldn't have a built-in injustice inherent in our laws.

There's much do be done to reform our laws to actually make "America the Land of the Free" and eliminating private prisons is a good place to start.

Based upon the corruption, brutality, inhumanity, immorality, dishonesty, and incompetence of the Trump administration the White House is the dirtiest house in America and there's no known cleanser that with remove the stains of the Trump Administration.

But profiting from the killing of babies in the womb is ok with you? Gotcha!

Agreed.

I agree with Warren on this and some of work on the corrupt banksters.
other than that I can't think of anything else.

Private prisons should be banned.

Except we know that Injun' Liz passed herself off as an Injun' to gain a position to which she was not entitled. She said she did. Harvard said she did. The evidence said she did.

You got anything to back your claim regarding Trump?
