Default Harley-Davidsons

When I was a teenager (more than 50 years ago), I briefly had a motorcycle. It was a small Honda.

And Hondas, Yamahas, Suzukis, Kawasakis, and more, seem to me utterly innocuous.

But I cannot say the same for Harley-Davidsons.

Our neighbor has a Harley. And it is almost louder than the planes that take off from the airport, about a half-mile away.

I have no inkling why some people prefer loudness in a motorcycle.

Is this some sort of macho thing?

I truly do not understand it.

An American made Harley-Davidson from the old days is built like a tank. I would not take one with parts made in China now even if it was a gift. Harley has gone weenie.

Harley is an iconic Brand product that includes the big sound.

BMW and Honda build much better bikes but none have the mystic or sound of a Harley. I've had 'em all plus Yamaha', Kawasaki, and Suzuki's.

Yes, Harley's have a distinctive sound and rumble. It is one of those things that you either like or hate.

However, one of the benefits to the loudness of the brand is that it does make it someone safer to ride in that people can hear one coming from a distance and look out for it. People are less likely to pull out in front of one when they can hear it coming as some people seem to not notice other motorcycles.

And if you live in a rural area where I do, having that loud bike scares away the deer that tend to run and jump across roads when they are startled. Being as they can hear them from a distance, they are less often startled when it shows up.

You beat me too it. I have ridden and raced motorcycles all my life, I always put aftermarket pipes on them, seems to give a little better throttle response, and a small boost in power. I had a pipe on the XR500 that I raced, that was spring loaded at the end. At low power it was quiet, but when I opened the throttle it pushed on the spring and roared to life.

On the street loud pipes save lives.

Like a Chevy (old school), a HD might have a few kinks but at least you could work on it and it would get you where you needed to go.
just as an observer I'd take the HD over any other mc. It's American; it's sexy and yes it's macho.

You ever hear of quality control and quality assurance? I don't think those two qualities are rampant among China producers.
