Re: The White House calls food stamp funds for Puerto Rico "excessive and unnecessary
I would have to look into the conditions in Puerto Rico and see if additional assistance is necessary beyond the assistance they already receive,
While it's an obvious 'hate Trump' piece, it's been 16 months since the hurricane. One would think that most residents have either returned to work, or are in the process of helping to rebuild.
I have been to Puerto Rico, off the tourist areas, my spouse worked there for two years back in 2005-2006. What I saw in the average everyday areas was horrifying... food garbage dumped in the streets, dead animals left on sidewalks and by the side of the road for DAYS... in 90 degree temperatures and the daily 4:00pm rains... the stench was unbelievable.
While I have a friend just outside on San Juan who survived the hurricane by heading into the mountains (lost a lot of personal goods, but the house still stands) she made things right with her home and was back to work within about 3 months. Waited for electricity for another few months.
Point being, the Puerto Ricans on the island are not what I would call (with, of course, exceptions) ambitious, or even energetic. Life is a slow stroll, and even though they are a US holding, they have their own government, which is inefficient and inept at best, and criminally corrupt on average What is the actual need of additional food stamps? Is it that people CAN'T do anything to help themselves, or is it that they WON'T?
