An update:

On Friday, December 22, FNC revealed these statistics:

Only half of the 542 Navy Super Hornets can even fly.

When the Navy deployed three jets this year, the jets had to be taken from a training squadron--thereby robbing young pilots of precious flight time.

The Air Force says it is 2,000 pilots short.

The Air Force also says that only half of its fleet of B-1 bombers can fly.

Only 37 percent (fewer than three out of eight) Marine Corps heavy-lift helicopters can fly (not counting 60 helicopters missing from the flight line).

For these reasons, Eric Edelman stated, at the Reagan National Defense Forum, that either China or Russia might now be able to defeat the US in a military conflict.
"In his second inaugural address, [Franklin D.] Roosevelt sought 'unimagined power' to enforce the 'proper subordination' of private power to public power. He got it…"—George Will, July 8, 2007
