President Trump has somewhat inexplicably claimed to have invented the phrase “priming the pump.”

In an interview with the Economist published Thursday, Trump took credit for the common saying while explaining his economic philosophy. He was arguing that it’s all right for a tax plan to increase the national deficit in the short term if it spurs economic growth in the long term.

Trump asked the magazine’s editors if they understood what he meant by “we have to prime the pump.” Then he asked if they had ever heard of the phrase while claiming to have thought it up earlier this week.

“Have you heard that expression used before? Because I haven’t heard it. I mean, I just… I came up with it a couple of days ago and I thought it was good. It’s what you have to do,” Trump said.

Shortly after the interview appeared, Merriam-Webster noted that the phrase “priming the pump” dates to the early 1800s and has been used to reference government investment expenditures since at least 1933.

I once made up a username for a forum I was joining, but the forum rejected the username because it was already in use. In other words, sometimes two or more people come up with the same idea.

I heard that expression from the time I could understand even the words: Also knew what priming a pump as well as having primed one at least a thousand times. Most o' Y'ALL know how old I am.

I had to prime a pump more than once myself. Thing is I can't imagine a scenario where Trump would ever have found himself priming a pump.

yeah trump was alive 150 /200 years ago when my ancestors were using that term so he invented it at the same time

On a more positive note, people still can't order dialysis w/o a referral.

My dad and I "pulled" one, put a new strainer joint on and drove it back down one morning...about two hours work. We pulled it with our John Deere tractor hydraulic lift and a log chain. We removed the pumping handle and valve assembly put a Two X four across the top and gently tapped it back down, then replaced the handle/valve assembly and were in business again.

I worked at John Deere years ago
