Todd worked in New York for the College Republican National Committee before moving two weeks ago to Pennsylvania, where her duties included recruiting college students, the committee's executive director, Ethan Eilon, has said.

Eilon declined to comment on the investigation Friday or to help The Associated Press contact Todd.

Earlier Friday, police said they had found inconsistencies in Todd's story. They gave her a lie-detector test, but wouldn't release the polygraph results. Investigators also said bank surveillance photos did not back up the woman's initial story of being attacked at an ATM.

Police interviewed Todd after she contacted police Wednesday night and again on Thursday, Bryant said. They asked her to come back Friday, ostensibly to help police put together a sketch of the man. Instead, detectives began interviewing her.

"They just started talking to her and she just opened up and said she wanted to tell the truth," Bryant said.

Bryant said it doesn't appear that anyone else put the woman up to the false report.

Police suspected all along that Todd might not be telling the truth, starting with the fact that the "B" was backward, Bryant said.

"We have robbers here in Pittsburgh, but they don't generally mutilate someone's face like that," Bryant said. "They just take the money and run."

The thing you don't want to admit about the situation is that "Joe the Plumber" put a nice, but FALSE FACE on the situation to try and misrepresent the situation.
If you put a REAL $250K+ business owner up there, he wouldn't look like "Joe the Plumber".

In fact, I believe it has already been pointed out HOW FEW BUSINESSES actually pass the $250K mark with tax hike...
But the Repubs love to put a "common" face on the problem to pretend that Obama's raising the taxes of "the common man", instead of the truthful situation of raising taxes on the "elite".

BOTH quotes were talking about MCCAIN and MCCAIN'S PRETENSE that he is fighting for "plumbers".
MCCAIN'S PRETENSE that Obama's tax plan will hurt "plumbers".

This has nothing to do with mocking "Joe the Plumber", but rather with mocking McCain's pretense that Obama's plan will hurt REAL plumbers...

They aren't. They are very, very successful businessmen. The rarity, not the norm.

McCain worker reaches deal in made-up assault case

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A John McCain campaign volunteer agreed on Thursday to enter a probation program for first-time offenders for falsely reporting that a Barack Obama supporter robbed and assaulted her and scratched a "B" on her cheek.

Ashley Todd, 20, of College Station, Texas, claimed the attack happened when the robber saw her McCain bumper sticker.

Todd appeared before a city judge and waived her right to a hearing and was to be released from jail later Thursday.

Under the agreement, her criminal record will be expunged after if she stays out of trouble and gets mental treatment on probation. Most people spend a year on probation in the program, which is for first-time, nonviolent offenders.

"Our focus was really, 'This is somebody who appeared to have some mental issues,'" said prosecutor Chris Avetta. "And we wanted to make sure she doesn't hurt herself or anybody else."

Todd's public defender, Emily McNally, declined to comment.

Todd initially told investigators she was attempting to use a bank ATM on Oct. 22 when a 6-foot-4 black man approached her from behind, put a knife to her throat and demanded money. She told police she handed the assailant $60 and walked away.

Todd, who is white, told investigators she suspected the man then noticed a John McCain sticker on her car. She said the man punched her in the back of the head, knocked her to the ground and scratched a backward letter "B" into her face with a dull knife.

After admitting she made up the story, the woman told investigators she believed she cut the "B" onto her own cheek, but didn't remember doing so, police said last week.
She was charged with a misdemeanor count of making a false police report and had been jailed since Oct. 24. She underwent a court-ordered psychiatric examination and was deemed to be competent to stand trial, but in need of further counseling.

The charge Todd faced carries a maximum two-year jail sentence.
