SUV denouncing family's support for Prop 8 is moved

Quote:
At last, the SUV with the inflammatory slogans denouncing a San Jose family for supporting Proposition 8 is gone from Harwood Road.

"They came last night, washed the paint off and drove away," said Bob Sundstrom, whose family incurred the wrath of two gay-marriage supporters after the family hung a huge banner on their garage in favor of the ballot measure banning same-sex marriage. "What a relief, I'm happy it's gone."

Sunday, two women in a Chevrolet Surbuban drove up in front of the Sundstrom's home and painted the sport-utility vehicle's windows with slogans accusing the devout Mormon family of seven of being "bigots" and "haters." So for the next few days, the Sundstroms were forced to reckon with the eyesore. Police told them the vehicle would be towed away if was not moved in three days.

Tuesday evening, however, one of the women whom Sundstrom recognized from the previous encounter showed up, washed off the slogans and then left in the SUV.

"She wasn't in the mood for conversation. It's obvious we weren't going to change each other's view," Sundstrom said. "She brought her own bucket to wash off the paint."

The SUV is registered to Mara McWilliams and Renee Mangrum, who married in 2004 when San Francisco began performing gay marriages. Neither could be reached for comment.
Example 14 gazillion of going with the "I will insult you because of your views" instead of the "I do not agree with your view, but respect your right to disagree" routine...

But this next line puts the whole thing into perspective...

Quote:
Even now, the entire episode still rankles Sundstrom.

"It astounds me that someone would do this," he said. "It's been quite a civics lesson for me and my friends."
Bang!...

In Utah they aren't called SUV's. Their called MAV's.
Mormon Assault Vehicles.
Before you get all bent, that came from an LDS kid who said that's what they looked like when they pulled up to a family park and 17 people got out each with a set task: setting up tents ; finding the right picnic table; passing out potato salad...

Post Re: SUV denouncing family's support for Prop 8 is moved

If we were to have a proposition which stated that blacks, or Jews, or handicapped, or ___ were to forever be included in a separate category separate from the "main" group, would we view it much differently?
Would "bigots" or "haters" be that far off from how people would view the suggestion?

While I think the people with the SUV were rudely over-zealous, it's difficult to take calls for "civility" seriously from people who want to ensure that I have inferior rights / privileges as compared to them. (And that statement is not meant to be pointing fingers on this board, but more as a vague statement talking more about the folks who fight even to ensure sodomy laws are on the books)
THAT is lacking in "civility" in the first place...

But I think MLK was able to win over a lot more than Malcom X, and as such it is often counter-productive to engage in such tactics...
