Default Why Schools Stopped Teaching Cursive

This is part of the dumbing down of the populace. The public education system used to be much better, but now it has become a propaganda machine to advance a totalitarian state, the exact opposite of what our country was designed to be.

States are beginning to reject the idea that kids can do without learning cursive handwriting.

Most importantly from our perspective is many historical documents like the Constitution and Declaration of Independence are written in cursive. If future citizens can’t read cursive they can’t read the Constitution in it’s original form and will be forced to rely on “translations.”

Societies move on, we just don't use cursive writing in anywhere the same capacity we did fifty years ago. Also I'm pretty sure we can get by and know the Constitution without knowing how to properly swirl an l to an e, and this coming form someone who did learn script and does appreciate its value, and still likes when I get the chance to use it. It's not some nefarious government plot, it's a combination of education standards trying to value skill over art, and advancing society and technology in general.

Could be worse though...

...they could make us use bolded comic sans.

I'm teaching my grandchildren cursive, printing, and good penmanship. You don't have any objections to that, eh?

Cursive is still taught here in our school district but there isn't a requirement that it be used. My parents and grandparents had beautiful script learned and perfected using the Palmer Method. Script was always faster taking notes or doing assignments. I encourage my child to use their cursive every day even though it's not considered cool. She is able to read her grandmother's recipe cards and poems and maybe someday she'll appreciate how really cool it is.

Because with all the liberal propaganda being taught to kids, there's no time for cursive.

I learned cursive with the Palmer method, but my handwriting is the opposite of beautiful.

I don't believe that cursive and good penmanship are ready for the scrapheap. Although it is still taught here, it isn't a graded subject. There are only 4 graded subjects deemed worthy of accountability. Science, Math, Language Arts, and Social Studies are graded in elementary school. My friends who home school emphasize the value of classical education and instruction in longhand is included. A public school house isn't required to instill in children, grandchildren, or great grandchildren it's value. We can pass it on if we choose to. It isn't difficult and far from a lost art.

Well when I was a kid I learned print, cursive and typing. Now it seems to me that today's kids should be able to handle it too.

What also speaks to the dumbing down of America is grammar and spelling. The kids today don't speak the language well and their spelling is terrible. They can't even spell simple words correctly. Now you may say there's spell check but spell check only helps if you are in the ball park with the spelling and the way some of these kids spell it's not even close. In 50 years our kids will be unable to spell at all. They will abbreviate everything and have a diminished vocabulary. Here in our school system spelling and vocabulary aren't taught after 5th grade. Two of my children are going through life with a 5th grade spelling/grammar; that sucks. It means they have trouble reading and communicating and a whole generation has already been raised that way. You said the kids will be able to read the Constitution but the up and coming generation will be lucky to be able to read Sally, Dick and Jane.

Further evidence if the dumbing down of America Is the last 100 years. My grandfather had a 6th grade education that would be today's equivalent of the first year of college. That's sad. He was proficient at reading and writing and did math in his head that most people today use a calculator for. His education wasn't as expanded with as many subjects but what education he did have(reading, writing,Math, and basic biology and history) was very solid. The opposite is happening today. The kids get a bigger variety of subjects but can't do any of them well.
