If Bin Laden were dead, and the Bush administration knew about it, they would have publicized it heavily as proof they are great in hopes to have some sort of justification of their blunders.

My guess would be no...

Bin laden dying would be seen as martyrdom and be the biggest recruitmen tool going today...

Which sounds better to a jihadist on the fence?..."He's living in a cave while sending other people to die?"...

...Or..."Bin Laden believed in what he was doing so much he gave his own life for the cause."?...

Bin Laden is a symbol. The entire world of extremist Islamism would still have been operating with impunity had we mounted a multi-billion dollar wild goose chase for OBL in 2001.
