For me, that's the easiest part to understand. They do it because it's a fun, pleasurable act, or an expression of rage that in the moment seems perfectly, almost divinely justified.

Plus there's the looting, we must never forget the looting! And of course the sure and certain knowledge that people who represent other people who confiscate about a third of my income will soon show up to purchase them a shiny new neighborhood using other people's money and telling then that all the evil that they did was someone else's fault.

I was more or less a "good boy," but I don't ever remember lacking for helpers when there were other boys about and things to be destroyed that we could get away with! (It took on a mystical quality if fire was somehow involved.")

Surely we weren't all that unusual?

Anything we could get away with and then some. I probably shot up a $ 1/2 million in old bottles and glassware at the dumps at the prices the crap brings on fleabay these days.

I thought we were talking about vandalism, destruction of other's property.

Shooting bottles isn't destruction as much as target practice. Backing your GTO onto a nice green lawn and throwing it against the house is vicious, evil destruction.

One is harmless fun and the other is vandalism.

One sharpens your eye

Tthe other is disrespectful to another person's work.

We played with home made bombs and smoke grenades and lots of stuff that would get you jail time today.

We built rockets and some of them blew up. But that was not why we built them. We did get arrested though, when our 6 foot metal cased two stage went up 5 miles from Lambert Airport.

But that was not vandalism or intentional destruction.

All my life I have built things. Forts, tree houses, cabins, barns. Never had the desire to insult someone who had done so by destroying his work.

This is why I keep saying "destruction that they could get away with." That didn't mean escaping the law, although maybe it meant escaping the parents just a little. I mean destruction that boys can engage in with a more or less clear conscience. That isn't a trash pile you've been told to bun! Stand up the boxes, arrange them nicely, place the plastic bottles just so, now artfully spread the kerosene and it's a city about to get disintegrated by Martians!

Think of it as sort of a Viking way to celebrate their work.

That's funny. And I get your point.

Please get mine. You see, that sounds like something my mother would say.
