A new Gallup poll finds that a large majority of Americans would like the Republican-controlled Congress, rather than President Obama, to set the direction for the country in the coming year, a marked change from 2012, when a slim majority said they preferred for Obama to guide the agenda.

"Who do you want to have more influence over the direction the nation takes in the next year—Barack Obama or the Republicans in Congress?" Gallup asked 828 U.S. adults.

Fifty-three percent of those surveyed said they wanted Republicans in Congress to have the greater influence, 36 percent said Obama, and 8 percent, well, didn't seem to care, answering "same/neither."

The question is does the establishment wing of the GOP understand people want them to lead? I am suspicious they will fall into the trap of defining making Congress work judged by the number of bills Obama signed.

Republicans are making noises about how it would be bad for Obama to declare amnesty for illegal aliens by fiat but not making the case for why it would be bad politically and for the Presidency. The argument is really very simple, it makes no sense to flood the labor market with millions of new permanent workers while talking about the struggling middle class and doing nothing to secure the border. If the President's agenda is to reduce wages and increase unemployment, then amnesty will accomplish that. Future Presidents will feel that they have the power to rewrite laws to suit themselves every time Congress doesn't pass a bill they want thanks to President Obama's rule by decree.
