FDA lifts tomato warning: CJOnline - FDA lifts tomato warning

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is removing its June 7 warning against eating certain types of red raw tomatoes thought to be linked to the outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul.

The FDA says that after a lengthy investigation, it has determined that fresh tomatoes now available in the domestic market aren’t associated with the current outbreak.

The FDA, working with officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state and local health departments, will continue to follow evidence showing that raw jalapeno and raw serrano peppers available in the domestic market may be linked to illnesses.

People in high risk populations, such as the elderly, infants and people with impaired immune systems, should avoid eating raw jalapeno and raw serrano peppers, the FDA says.

According to the CDC, 1,220 people infected with Salmonella Saintpaul have been identified in 42 states, the District of Columbia and Canada.

FDA:" OOOOOPS! I guess after we pretty much destroyed the tomato industry...it looks like it wasn't tomatoes, after all! Sorry 'bout that. We suspect it's the peppers, so until we find out...don't eat them. Then again, maybe it's the avocados. Or, it could be the tortillas. Or something".

If they would just label th country of origin and the sellers/buyers this crap wouldn't happen. But our national Chamber of Commerce and others don't want that simple regulation. I ask why?

First of all, it's not the gov't that putting people at risk, in fact in this situation they are the ones being the nanny for people too dumb to rinse off their food before eating it. So, you can take your European psuedo-superiority and stuff it in your haggis.

How about people learn to wash their food before eating it???? Or cook it first if they are confident of it's safety. People need to take responsibility for taking the proper steps to ensure that they are eating safely. I do agree that the food industry needs to get it's act together and follow much higher standards of cleanliness, including insisting on imports following the same standards.

The best thing to do is stop buying that crap they pass off as vegetables in the grocery stores. I've go news for those of you who do: TOMATOES ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HARD AND ORANGE. STRAWBERRIES ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HOLLOW AND WHITE INSIDE. PEACHES ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE CRUNCHY. Buy locally whenever possible or better yet grow as much of your own as you can. I'd love to see a new version of "Victory Gardens" being planted and the agri-corporations put into a situation where they don't have to import to keep up with demand.

Girl, peppers are just about the easiest thing in the world to grow. Grow a bunch of them and can and/or dry as much as you need for the rest of the year. If you plant 'em in pots and have a sunny window, you can keep 'em growing year 'round.

Been saying this for years. Finally for some reason, many of my family members have done just that this year. And all I got to do was plant a couple of things (I assure you one was peppers).
But I have my datl pepper hotline Datl Do-It Products
A dat'l pepper (native to St. Augustine, Fla.) will make a jalepeno cry!

I've got an aunt who's Guamanian. She used to make this stuff called Finadetti (sp?). It made from raw coconut, fresh tuna, garlic and these little tiny peppers that her aunt sent her from China (she was a missionary there). My aunt wore rubber gloves when handling these little monsters and threw the gloves out afterward. Finadetti is without a doubt the single hottest dish I have ever had (and one of the tastiest). See, the peppers she used aren't exactly legal to import into America due to the fact that they are so hot that just handling them can cause damage to your skin. These things make Scotch Bonnets seem like sweet candy.
