There are any number of reasons that contribute to one's strength of convictions, and some of them are right and some wrong. Eli Saslow knows as much about the people of Findlay as he does about what reasons they have for the strength of their convictions. But he writes very definitively as if he knows.
People have every right, and even a duty to determine everything they can about a Presidential candidate so as to make a wise and educated choice at the voting booth. They have every right and duty to sift through everything they are reading and seeing and hearing about the people who are asking for our votes.
Welcome to the world.
There is barely a discussion if any at all about the color of Obama's skin unless Obama himself....or people like Eli Saslow and you bring it up. Why is that?

You write as though Eli Saslow's account was "pure fiction", and not a representation of a true slice of the community of Findlay. Were not "real people" interviewed? Did they not express their unbiased opinions?
I think Findlay (based on the piece) is quite representative of the country, at large, and probably deserves the title of "Flag City, USA".
You, very well, may "hate racism", but you cannot suggest that it does not exist, and most certainly, within the confines of "Findlay".
And that is precisely "the problem". Denial. Denial of reality. Racism exists, yet people go on pretending like it doesn't, and quickly, change the topic.
America belongs in the analyst's chair...and needs to get in touch with itself.

"Blur the truth"?????....America and "Findlay" wouldn't know the truth if it bit down it on their proverbial asses. How can you address "false claims of racism", when you can't even acknowledge "factual claims of racism", without thinking that it's exaggeration? The patient is ill, and don't know it.
It would be problematic for Saslow to interview every person in Findlay, to get their views...he did a sampling of the populace...likewise, all Americans aren't so cynical as to believe that Obama is the boogie man..in fact, a large portion of the "white voting populace" is supporting him, including some notable characters on the American Stage. Almost "mainstream", but not quite, yet.
of course, people have the right to fully investigate any candidate for office....the byword is "fairly", which has not been the case.
