Dick Cheney feared death by terrorist heart-device hack

Does anyone really buy this story? :rolls

Former Vice President Dick Cheney had his heart device partially disabled so that terrorist couldn’t hack into the defibrillator implanted in his chest and send him a fatal electrical shock.

According to a “60 Minutes” interview with Dr. Sanjay Gupta that is scheduled to air this Sunday, Cheney’s cardiologist Jonathan Reiner had the defibrillator’s wireless device disabled when it was implanted in 2007. Several years later, Reiner’s decision to partially disable the medical device really hit home for the former vice president.

As he watched an episode of Showtime’s “Homeland,” in which terrorists terrorists kill the vice president by sending a signal to his wireless medical device, Cheney realized how “credible” the threat really was.

“I was aware of the danger…that existed…I found it credible,” he told Gupta. “I know from the experience we had and the necessity for adjusting my own device, that it was an accurate portrayal of what was possible.”

ABC News reports, however, that the FDA looked into the possibility of heart-device hacks and that they agency said there is no cause for concern for the approximately three million Americans with heart devices.

In the same “60 Minutes” interview, Cheney’s cardiologist discusses his concern that the former vice president couldn’t deal with the stresses of 9/11. The Associated Press reports that medical tests that morning revealed that Cheney had a condition known as hyperkalemia, which could result in cardiac arrest.

“Oh, great, the vice president is going to die tonight from hyperkalemia,” Reiner remembers thinking.

Despite suffering multiple heart attacks since the age of 37, Cheney said that his heart health didn’t severely impact his decision making process when it came to big-time decisions like the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

“You know, I was as good as I could be, you know, given the fact I was sixty-some years old at that point and a heart patient,” Cheney told Gupta.

According to CBS News, Cheney has dealt with five heart attacks necessitating multiple angioplasties and catheterizations, in addition to a quadruple bypass operation.

Was the former vice president’s fear of a heart-device hack justified? Do you think Cheney’s heart health affected his decision-making process? Sound off in the comments section.

Well, that sounds like you are talking about Obama, and we are just going to keep running around in circles if you think Cheney was more damaging to America than Obama is, execept he hasn't stepped down yet.:thumbsup

The topic is basically a non-thread. Might as well be about PeeWee Herman.

I think he is lying about the idea that anyone serious thought this would be a terrorist plot. Cheney may have convinced i=his Dr. who is a friend of his but the idea this was ever considered a real threat is as real as the WMD's in Iraq.

Oh I don't know about that. A lot of people probably thought the world would be better off. :)
